The Informer is one of the year’s more pleasant genre surprises: a clenched fist of a crime thriller in the mode of The Departed or The Town, in which every element is just a notch smarter than you’d expect. Generic though the film may look, it holds together absorbingly, thanks to a sturdy script which ups stakes and adds characters with cunning and intelligence.

I started watching movies with this main actor because of the killing. He is very versatile and everything that he has been in that I have seen is an excellent show or movie. Leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Maybe not perfect but when I just read someone’s opinion with bad score, that the plot was predictable I laughed hard and had to write a short review. Many surprising plot twists in this movie. Keeps you entertained from beginning to the end.

The intrigues are breathless and the violence so in your face that it takes a seriously off-key third act to make this one more a mixed bag than it was setting up to be.

While the script bounces from the cops to the feds to the cons and back, it fails to take us to that Donnie Brasco sweet spot in which the psychological pressures of being In Too Deep threaten to crack our hero, whether somebody gets a shiv into him or not.

It’s a busy film, so it holds your attention that way. But it’s busy checking off all of the crooks and crooked cops cliches it can, leaving the project little time to experiment with much that’s new. Or worthwhile.

Joel Kinnaman plays the titular character, who’s undercover to help the FBI bring down a Polish drug operation. As expected, things go wrong almost immediately and he spends the rest of the movie fighting for his life and innocence. Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen are also in the cast, but it’s really Kennaman’s show. He makes a solid tough guy with an edge of brains. The film itself unfolds with predictable developments, so it’s more about the character extricating himself out of this predicament, than any strong action beats. Solid drama, but not special, although it does bode well for Kennaman’s future action hero status.
