So watchable right off the bat. ... Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners is a fantastic addition to the Cyberpunk universe. Its narrative is even more engaging than the original game in certain respects, with a protagonist it’s easy to get behind and root for.
Perfectly soul-crushing. The primary issues with Cyberpunk as a franchise never branched from its setting, tone, or characters - and have everything to do with how buggy and unfinished the game was at launch. This anime is probably single-handedly the reason as to why people gave Cyberpunk a second chance, while initially I thought it to just be an advertisement for the game, after another re-watch its true merits as a piece of media hit me like a ton of bricks. It's hauntingly beautiful with how it navigates themes of hopelessness, the idea of the self, and the importance of others not only on the path to recovery, but on the path to self-destruction. There is no character I hate, no episode I think is filler, it is concise, to-the-point and made me fall in love with franchise in a way the game never allowed me to. It is the perfect adaptation of its source material into a TV show.
Way too hyped for what it is (like the game before the updates) - cyberpunk anime based on the Cyberpunk universe created by Mike Pondsmith, the anime serves as a prequel to the game and takes place about a year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077. It got the seal of approval by the Polish Developer CD **** is set on a future city on California (Night City) in a world where gangs and cybernetic implants are usual. The main "hero" (or "anti-hero" since it runs a gang in the future on the series) is a cocky latin-american cocky kid with a hard working mother and that gets involved on gangs war, getting implants and changing character through the series.Despite the animation being totally Japanese in the form of anime, the main error probably is the main story that the screenplay is based (written by a Polish team)... it is bad written, dumb and previsible and I had zero empathy with the protagonist. The quality of animation is good, but not phenomenal. Action is frenetic but unreal to the point of being silly and the characters have no realistic traces at all. Maybe because of this I took 1 and a half year to be able to see it **** same can be said of the opening music "This Fffire" by Franz Ferdinand probably one of the worst music chosen for the anime by a band already dead in 2023 (it was a more proheminant band from 20y **** was nominated to a ton of anime awards, but got only the best best anime of the year ("only" because it had more than 10 **** me it is a 6.0 score out of 10.0 / B. Go play this game game that is a 100% better or go known the Syndicate games and remake on Xbox to see some good cyberpunk and similar stuff, or go see Appleseed or Ghost in Shell series to a good quality cyberpunk anime.
Everyone giving this is 10/10 is out of their minds.
This show is painfully mediocre.
Plain, stereotypical characters, boring story and very very lazy animations.
Watch Ghost in the Shell, Darker than Black, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, or even Akira.
I believe with my heart that you will then realize how overrated this show is.
I can't understand how today everyones standards have become so low that this, medicore show, this blatant ripoff from other good shows is getting such a high praise.
As someone who actually knows his Cyperpunk animes, this is far below average, 3/10.
Final thought: Even if you don't agree with my rating, please check out those anime above. You won't regret it.
Beloved by the same ones holding out hope for the letdown CDPR sprung on everyone. There's nothing here you couldn't get from Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or Cowboy Bebop. Even Altered Carbon's animated film blows this out of the water. Only difference is they did it better. Some tie ins and callbacks to the game are there for fans for whatever that's worth, but the whole affair feels so lazy. The writing is childish and lackluster, the world is decent but it's just the same Night City from the game. Also the animation style is generic, the characters are forgettable cliches, even the action scenes have been done better elsewhere. Just not anything of quality or substance here.
