As wonderful as it is to return to this series’ interpretations of Major Kusanagi and company after more than a decade away, you’d be better off dusting off Stand Alone Complex DVDs and give this one a pass.
It’s a great rendition of the universe built by the late two seasons anime git sac. The tone remains untouched and despiste the difference in visuals the characters remain the same as the original series. They were not dumbed down in any way. The stakes continue to be huge as they were before. Some purists may be discouraged by the 3D visuals and although I miss the original animation, and some times the new animation may seem janky at first, they make the fight scenes a super exciting treat to watch. And I do believe the original voice actors of the Sac universe reprieved their roles for the Japanese voices which is a wonderful piece of news. Since the current covid-19 pandemic is taking its toll, we will have to wait to hear if the English voice actors of the original series return as well. But I highly recommend this new series to any git fan, especially to any Sac fan out there. Move past your pre judgments and you will be able to enjoy a great history involving the section 9 we know and love! Great job to everybody involved in this project. Oh almost forgot, yes the incredible soundtrack that yoko kanno made for the original series is indeed missing, but don’t let this discourage you the one they got for the show although not as great still does it’s job very well and immerses you in this amazing futuristic world, but it has to be noted it lacks the depth that yoko kanno brought to the table with her amazing talent. Overall an incredible take on the universe of ghost in the shell stand alone complex! MUST WATCH! (Don’t let the trailer fool you! It makes this series seem shallow but it’s actually very deep and mature.)
I am a fan of the very first film, and somewhat a fan of the second film. I haven't found any of the series that have followed that engaging, and this is the worst of the bunch so far, and decidedly average. Average animation, and an averagely executed story. The desperate fan may want to give it a watch.
Ghosts of the past
The first episode didn't entice me to watch more. There is nothing engaging to find and most is run of the mill and sometimes downright bad.
The story is nothing to write home about. Batou and Major have had their character arcs so maybe it is better to introduce new characters. Wait, they do, but those are so terrible cliché that they make Batou and Major interesting again. Perhaps that is why.
Heavy exposition, denoting that you are unable or unwilling to weave the background story into the narrative.
Overdone sequences filled with explosions and shooting resulting in massive damage to assets but without any consequence, taking away any tension. It is not required that people die, but if you take away the sense that they might die all these fights are just fireworks that take up too much time. This is exacerbated by the fact that the participants treat such deadly activities as if they are fireworks; as if they know they won't die. As if they know they are just animations (which would be a fun twist). Big bangs are not a good alternative for thoughtful story telling.
Twists that are so cheap as to make you groan, such as a character that gets killed, but then we find out it is all…. a dream. oh, eh. Wait.. eh virtual reality.
The art itself is so terrible run of the mill. It suffices in the way that white bread can feed a person, but it is also as dull as hell. On top of that, this series cannot shake itself loose of the usual mix of depilated world combined with neo art.
The worst is the story telling. It is just a rehash of what we have seen before, but then some espionage agencies thrown in. Some of the characters look like a rip-off from agent Smith from the Matrix. Which made me groan even more.
A reviewer noted that the world has advanced with movies (AI, Bladerunner 2049) and series(Westworld) that explore more and different themes set in a near future world deeper and more meaningful ways. Ghost in the shell might have been something to behold back in the day, but it has the same issue as observed by someone with Alien(s) and The Terminator: after the first two the material is exhausted and it is better to do something new instead of clinging to your ghosts of the past.
There use to be deep philosophical concepts in ghost in the shell. This new show is lacking content and is out rite bad compared to its predecessors. A common complaint is the cgi but this has so much more wrong with it than that.
I am usually not fond of vulgarity, but it saves a lot of time to put it bluntly: This rendition of Ghost in the Shell is just plain **** Animations are horrible. Everything looks cheap and uncreative, trying desparately to be cool, yet failing to get even remotely close to the original movie or sac-series. Even the title and end sonds ****.
