Even more challenging for writers is balancing the truth within some of these cliches, while honoring the greater complexity of the overarching story. In Season 2 of Little America, the episodes strike a lovely balance between these two competing interests, delivering eight individual vignettes that speak to the strength of the human spirit and celebrate the texture of America’s cultural tapestry.
Little America doesn’t romanticize anyone’s struggles, nor does it place the U.S. on a pedestal. It portrays harsh realities in profound ways. Each episode ends with an update on how the lead character featured is faring in real life. It brings an added layer of awe to the stories that have just played out.
Each of these stories paints a complex picture of the perseverance and endurance of American immigrants and the ways in which they add to the vast tapestry of the country they’ve chosen to call home. Like season one, all eight stories are narratively disconnected but watch them all together, and their cumulative effect hits with tremendous impact. ... Punches well above its weight class.
Thematically, Season 2 tends to dwell on contrasting viewpoints that come to common resolutions, but even that topical concentration serves the joyful inspirations always inherent to the series’ heart.
For those who enjoyed the stories told in the first season, this second outing is a welcome return; but for anyone who might not have tuned in to the show before, it’s absolutely possible to jump in with any of the episodes that might catch the eye and have a lovely time.
Little America continues to give positive stories about the immigrant experience in the U.S. without glossing over problems or covering things over with a thick layer of sweetness. The stories are inspirational but grounded in reality, and the second season is as entertaining as the first.
