James Gunn's first major TV project takes this blunt instrument of an anti-hero and uses him as the base for an at times strange, at times pretty fun action-horror adventure. (The term "superhero"... does not feel particularly applicable, in this case.)
Enjoyment. All the way thru, from the intro to the end of last episode. After watching - realization its being a long time since i enjoyed watching a tv show that much. The cast, cast as a team, writing, filming, jokes - all top level. especially for tv humor - where so many fails, this one hits the mark: humor is smart, actually funny and in a good style - for all sexually referencing jokes none going at low toilet level. Simply one of the perfect tv shows you watch and enjoy. Hope season 2 will come out and will be at the same level.
Easily the best show I saw in 2023. I liked the movie Suicide Squad, but did not expect much of this show when I booted it up. And thus I was pleasantly surprised: fun, sometimes surprisingly emotional, great story development and wacky at the same time.
Self-conscious but never smug, sociopathic and yet also sweet, and timely if never preachy, it’s the very sort of no-holds-barred, tongue-in-cheek endeavor that’s become Gunn’s specialty.
Peacemaker, if you can stomach the title character’s lunkheaded views (and temporarily forgive if not forget his actions in The Suicide Squad), is a lot of James Gunn fun.
What makes Peacemaker such an interesting and compelling character is his unrepentant awfulness, and the series choosing to back-pedal on what could be considered his defining traits only makes for an aggressively fine follow-up.
So far, many of the superhero shows invading TV (Marvel and DC) have been a be careful what you wish for propositions: want more character and less mindless action? Well, that only works when the characters are multi-dimensional and the writing is top-notch. Argue all you want, about what’s been seen on Disney+ so far (and the less said about the embarrassing DC/The CW, the better), but “Peacemaker” does not make a case for its main character’s existence beyond the big screen, let alone as the front and center lead.
Make up your own mind, but this show is crazy overrated. Messy storytelling, unfunny humor where the joke is always just to belabor a point, a lot of virtue signaling from James Gunn, and stakes you never quite feel because the whole thing feels like an SNL sketch run way too long. The overuse of the word **** borders on the absurd and was extremely distracting. The only thing it kind of excels at is fight choreography.
To many hypercritical sjw messaging like misgending bad but being an ass is ok. Every episode your reminded one character is a lesbian like that's all there is to her, just a checklist. Last episode one character is torn down to give lesbian character a forced moment that would of been better if they acted like a team.
