Moffat and his very deep bench of talented performers create characters that defy expectation and grow in complexity with each episode.

The performances for the most part fill in some credibility gaps in how the characters are written.
Its few glaring missteps aside, it's a thoughtful, rewarding drama.
With the second and third episodes ever more predictable, and, not least, with Martha's character gone flat under the weight of a preening righteousness. If bad scriptwriting were a prosecutable offense, Ms. Peake might have a case here. Still, episode one of Silk is smartly written and highly entertaining--a treat, in short, and at two hours a sumptuous one.
Ms. Peake is excellent as Costello, but the character, and the show, feel so rigged and inauthentic that even her skilled work can’t make the case for our sticking around.
