South Park never takes the easy route nor does it ever take it easy on anyone. For that, it’s become a voice worth hearing every year, and one we’ll be eager to engage with throughout Season 20.
Whenever I think this show has lost its touch it always surprises me with a new great season. 18 and 19 were some of the first good seasons in a long time and 20 is the first great season in a long time. Only problem was the underwhelming ending.

After first two or three episodes I was sure i'm gonna love this season even more than the last one. However the time passed, and the focus sadly drifted from the boys' story which could be a great, ironic commentary on racism, to Gerald's one, which, I must say is one of the most boring stories Matt and Trey could possibly come up with. I don't think it would be very good even as a three parter. Now we have the same story with the same jokes dragged on for 6 episodes already, and it's almost sure we will have to deal with it for the rest of the season. Same happened with Garrison's plot. The election episodes in this show have always been at least good, but now every time he gets screen time and the plot is about the election you can already tell what jokes will be used.
I absolutely loved he continuus elements in the previous two seasons. The thing is, in s18 and s19 every episode still had it's own little story which was resolved in 25 minutes, like all the seasons before. Now the continuity is so heavy we almost don't see the main four boys anymore because the creators still have Gerald's story basically unresolved, what's worse, after episodes 3-5 seemed to at least push it forward episode 6 "Fort Collins" basically brought it back to the starting point
Well, season 20 is still a good half an hour of TV. However if you compare it to any of the earlier seasons, it looks just so... bland. I wish next year Matt and Trey would at least cut the episode continuity to the way it was last year. I have nothing against the continuity itself, it's just I feel it should be a small part of the show, it should be for example characters remembering what happened earlier, or relationships between them carrying over to the next episode/season. That would be a nice touch for the show, however now some of the episodes feel just pretty much boring. Especially when focused on a character who never was in spotlight in a huge role or even had a decent backstory.
I really think the season would have been better if the creators picked the kids story first. Maybe then Gerald's story would be more interesting - if it was not pushed so hard on us. After all, the 4 boys were the main characters since the first episode, their personalities are much more complex then any of the adults, and I dont understand why Matt and Trey suddenly are trying to change that after 20 years.
6 episodes in and this new season feels like a different show. The season has taken a departure from the overly violent and gritty style that we've seen in all the previous seasons which is fine I guess. Its only natural that matt and Trey would want to change things up after being on air for almost 10 years. The main problem with this though is that they've changed pretty much everything about the show since season 19, including the humor. There's just less of it. There aren't that many jokes in this season, it's weird. On top of that, alot of the jokes are kind of lame (looking at you, 'member berries). Maybe im just desensitized from watching most of the south park episodes, but I can watch a south park ep i haven't seen before and find it funnier than i did any of the season 20 eps. Another thing that's annoying is the season doesn't really revolve around the main protagonists (kenny, kyle, cartman, and stan), 2 of them havent even had any dialogue yet (this is kind of a personal peeve i guess). Hopefully the season gets better, but direction its heading in seems really lame so far.
I'm a huge South Park fan. Season 19 was one of the best seasons they've had & I loved how it was overall one continuous story, yet each episode focused on a new commentary topic (whole foods' cashier harassment, yelp, hipster condos, pop-up ads, etc), even though the end of the season got kinda dark, it was a great season.
3 episodes into Season 20, I'm already sick of it ALL being one dark story line. The first episode started off hysterical, but got dark quickly. Episodes 2 & 3 haven't stood out as individual stories or had many funny situations (but omg ENOUGH with the member berries! Whatever they are, they aren't funny).
I hope season 20 picks up :)
Worst season in the show's history. I've been a fan of since the beginning and I have to say it's become unbearable to watch. Lazy writing, jokes played out, predictable and generally unfunny. Shockingly bad.
