The A Word is exceptionally authentic in everything it does. Beautiful? Yes. Emotionally sound? Absolutely. Funny? Very much so. But above all, it rings true, and leaves you a little better off than you were before.
If the BBC and writer Peter Bowker had it in mind to create a soft-soapy drama with lots of nice loving folk, some with disabilities, then they’ve succeeded magnificently – a pioneering if understated achievement.
As the series begins, it’s holding on tight to what endures and gracefully letting go what doesn’t.
