If all this sounds heady, pretentious or derivative, then Westworld may eventually turn out to be guilty as charged. But from at least from the first two episodes sampled, Westworld is also a genuinely different new series that offers something even better than that: It’s genuinely engaging.

Westworld has its head near-bursting with new angles on old sci-fi themes, honoring the source material’s creator in the process, but it’s also a crowd-pleaser in the vein of HBO’s most pristine, top-shelf geek offerings that slowly eke out existence in the mainstream.

Jonathan Nolan, working with his wife, Lisa Joy, under the umbrella of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, has turned out a dazzling-looking thriller that is also a thoughtful exploration of the possibilities and hazards of artificial intelligence.

Westworld is explicitly, and often wittily, an exploitation series about exploitation, full of naked bodies that are meant to make us think about nudity and violence that comments on violence. It’s the kind of trippy conceptual project that would be unbearable if it weren’t so elegantly made. So far, it works, mostly--not because it’s perfect but because it gets under your skin.

Ed Harris, picking up where Yul Brynner left off in the film, cuts a menacing figure as the Man in Black, a killing machine determined to find a maze that may lead him out of the park. In between these golden nuggets are meandering scenes that take a long time to acclimate park visitors (Jimmi Simpson, Ben Barnes) to the repertoire of narratives on display.

Westworld looks terrific; its directors have shot its Western locations to stunning effect. But its warmly saturated outdoor scenes and its surface slickness aren’t enough to mask the indecision, condescension, and hollowness at its core.

These worlds are populated with lifelike androids that are practically indistinguishable from human beings, each programmed in character for their assigned historical environment. Based on the feature film that was created over three decades ago by Michael Crichton, Who is also known for his work in Jurassic Park. Considering the names that are behind this colossal project, it goes without saying that I had high hopes for this series. I am someone that isn't easily impressed. At least, that's what I'm told. So, When I say this show has surpassed my wildest expectations, it should give you an idea of what awaits you. Emphasis on "idea". As, this is one of those shows that is hard to describe. Mainly because it renders a world where the only limit is your imagination. It thrives on human desire, or another way to phrase it, human design. HBO has invested a whopping one hundred million dollars on this project and I for one hope they get there moneys worth because this series deserves it. Expand

I highly recommend you to binge onto this show even though you haven't watched the original Westworld. I gotta tell ya that this show really does feel like that you are diving into the story of Red Dead Redemption or The Matrix combined but it sets in the old wild west with androids! The production design, the outstanding writing, the notable actors, and the soundtrack composed by Game of Thrones' and Prison Breaks' Ramin Djawadi is superb! Trust me, it's awesome, it's gripping as hell, it's sexy, it's bloody epic, and quite yet romantic!

PS: I think that A LOT of people will start doing their theories like what they're doing to other shows and this show is one of them and it will get millions of people watching this. Good job HBO for bringing this terrific show onto your lineup! :)

Production values are sky-high: the acting, setting, CG, audio and cinematography are excellent. The storyline, sadly, is a predictable MMORPG ripoff. The characterisation is crude: the bad guy wears a black hat, the "everyman" character wears a white one. The robot hookers have hearts of gold, the hispanics are peasants etc etc. There's an implied critique of modern movie-making, but repeating the tropes doesn't make for good irony. Unless you've been asleep for the last three decades of science fiction, the AI plot will be extremely familiar.

My advice, wait for the box-set.

Season 1 was good. Season 2 took a strange turn. Confused... The feel of the show changed, parts of season 2 seemed forced.
