Hitman’s less gifted cousin has a lot of flaws that I need to point out, like a poor story that I didn’t care about, stupid AI painfully reminding that you’re playing a game, and dated visuals. Surprisingly, despite all that I do not regret playing Alekhine’s Gun, because its mechanics are solid and eleven locations are varied and well-designed. [05/2016, p.50]
You come at the king, you best not miss. Comparing Alekhine’s Gun to an AAA title like Hitman may seem unfair, but Maximum Games made the mistake of trying to defeat the ruler of the genre with its own weapons and they take a beating on every front. [May 2016]
Alekhine's Gun – военный стелс-экшен, известный под названиями Смерть Шпионам 2 и Death to Spies 3: Ghost of Moscow. Игра, разработанная российской компанией Haggard Games призвана продолжить сюжет первой части Смерть Шпионам, а также дополнения к ней – Момент истины.
Alekhine’s Gun is named after a sharp and refined move in chess, that requires thinking and weighting. The lack of these skills in a stealth game that carries his name would probably make Alekhine turn in his grave and disappoint every fan of this genre.
Stealth games are meant to be challenging and should feel like a tense, punishing experience. But Alekhine’s Gun is stretch too far and instead punishes you because of its poor mechanics and terrible AI.
Alekhine's Gun could have been a really good game if only it had debuted 10 years ago. It's a stealth game that copies gameplay mechanics from the Hitman series and adds some semi-original ideas but it turns out not to be enough. The complete game is an outdated little monster that lies far from today's standards and is priced like a much, much better game.
Like the chess move it’s named after, Alekhine’s Gun puts its pieces in the right places, but then it fails to follow through with any quality or grace. It’s hard to feel accomplished after pulling off a clean kill when the targets lack the competence to even defend themselves.
A sad disappointment, even sadder by people blindly praising it before they actually get to see how bad it is.
Sound quality, graphics, and A.I. here are at a new low. The gameplay is... okay, but, as a stealth game, this is abysmal! Stealth is made pointless by the, once again, terrible A.I., who will see you lock-picking a door and walk away, like nothing is happening at all. Stealth also has fewer options than in the original game, which came out in 2007! Also, please explain to me why you're handed NOISY guns as a reward for stealth? I'd think that if you were going by the stealthy rules, you'd like something to keep the silence, not just kill it.
Also, in case you were wondering, the story isn't too great, either.
2/10, mainly because the first 2 hours or-so aren't so terrible.
Alekhine's Gun set out to fill a yawning abyss left by Hitman's departure from it's original style and unfortunately failed to meet the enjoyment factor of any game in the series. It doesn't really stand up to much in the genre at all. Considering I wanted to enjoy this, the fact that I had to tap out midway into mission 2 speaks volumes.
Before playing I read the users reviews here, so I can't say that I wasn't fairly warned. Like another user mentioned, the game seems to be trying to emulate Hitman Blood Money, but goes ahead and bungles all the things that made the aforesaid game pleasing and is a technical nightmare to ****'t get me wrong there were aspects of the game that sometimes had flashes of inspiration like the lock picking and the art direction was good enough to carry off some decent atmosphere but all the mistakes like the broken AI where NPCs rely on cone sight distance and nearly only become suspicious from your costume and not what you are doing. More words would be a waste of time, this game crashes and burns spectacularly - twice my video card totally dropped out and I had to completely power offon the computer to get a picture back...sounds unpleasant doesn't it? In the log file for the game it says the renderer is a debug **** game seems to be in alpha stage. Fair warning.
I honestly don't understand any positive review on this game. Now, I'm not trying to discourage anyone from either trying the game or recommend it to other, but please - make no mistake with this one and please, be very, very sure about trying it. I call this game "refund-dumb", because the first two hours of the game is quite... ok-ish. But you can't use Steam's refund option after the 2 hours, from which the game starts to fall on its head again, and again, and again.
Alekhine's Gun was initially Death to Spies 3 that took a lot of evident inspiration from Hitman: Blood Money. Getting those two games/franchises together, you might have a million-dollar idea on your hands. But AG fails to execute ANYTHING properly. The story is boring, the characters are dull, level design is terrible
