But creator Zach Gage is clearly some kind of evil genius, because no sooner had we weaned ourself off his furiously addictive game than he laughed like a maniac and presented this update, which boasts Retina graphics, universal support and two new modes.
Bit Pilot's simple graphics belie the atrocious challenge at hand.
The results are uncommonly nuanced and tactile, though perhaps that's no surprise given its creator's keen interest in digital sculpture.
While Bit Pilot, at face value, may not seem to have much to offer, the exact opposite is true; it's a deceptively-intense game with a lot of personality, fluid controls and a thought-provoking soundtrack.
Bit Pilot uses its simplicity as an asset to create a surprisingly addictive twitch-reaction experience, and the music will make anyone nostalgic for the 8-bit era smile.
The 8-bit soundtrack is a great fit, and I love the fact that more background music can be unlocked by accumulating a high overall score.
This retro take on the bullet hell genre might be hard to get the hang of, but it will keep you coming back for more.
