When things start getting really explosive — which is to say, almost immediately — what you see is a game that’s a whole lot of fun. Destropolis may only do one thing, but it does that one thing very, very well.
Destropolis is a fun arcade game, that score chasers will adore. Unfortunately for everyone else, there just isn't enough content to keep you coming back for more.
Destropolis can be summed up in two words: minimalist and frantic,
that's what better characterizes this twin-stick shooter where waves of
enemies will rush towards the player - or even better, players in
cooperative mode. There are plenty of like-minded games on the Nintendo
Switch eShop catalogue but Destropolis can still put up a fun, fresh
experience. Those looking for something longer and more in-depth should
look elsewhere, though, as Destropolis is mostly aimed at quick and
intense experiences.
Even if you don’t become an expert player, Destropolis has plenty to offer in the way of a casual quickplay experience. It feels like it could easily be a mobile title, but it fits well on Nintendo Switch. Destropolis is, at the very least, a nice way to take a break from the holiday craziness for a quick gameplay session or two.
As a simple twin-stick score-chaser, Destropolis gets the job done but its more annoying aspects will make you scratch your head.
I had a blast during my time spent with Destropolis. However, chances are it’s probably not the type of game that will keep you glued to your Switch for hours. With only one mode available, things do get repetitive fairly quickly. Still, the game features co-op for up to three players. So if you have a handful of friends to bust some blocks with, it’s a delightfully chaotic way to kill a half-hour or so. But after that, you’ll probably want to move onto something a bit more substantive.
Destropolis comes off as an impressive freeware implementation of a game that will later blow up rather than a release ready for retail. All the pieces are here, there's a little style differentiating it from the rest, and the game is fun for a few minutes at a time. If the developers take the time to come up with more than one mode, additional out-there weapons and power-ups, and a handful of colorful touches, a follow-up could really be something to see. As for now, Destropolis will serve players looking for a few minutes of distraction on the eShop, but won't be one people return to over and over once its initial flash subsides.
