Dread Templar is a game with a nice mix between modern gameplay and themes. Is like an old videogame with recent visuals. The game offers tons of hours and challenges for the fans of the genre.
Whatever flaws you can find with Dread Templar, one thing counters them all: it’s hellishly fun to play. The speed of the action, your impressive arsenal, the pounding soundtrack – it all combines to create a thrilling first-person experience that you can’t help but lose yourself in. As far as retro-inspired shooters go, Dread Templar is up there with the best of them.
Dread Templar does a solid job of providing a game that feels like it belongs in the 90's. The shooting is great and there are plenty of guns and enemies. There are a lot of levels filled to the brim with secrets to hunt down. There are plenty of upgrades to find and augment your playstyle with. The aesthetic is dark and grim. Everything gels together nicely. But by trying too hard to replicate a 90's shooter, Dread Templar misses out on a few modern mechanics that would've really helped the gameplay.
You probably already know if you are the target audience for Dread Templar. The game skillfully captures the spirit of classic FPS’, for better and for worse. The challenging gameplay with a large arsenal of crazy weapons is there, along with deep, secret-filled levels. However, it has all been done before, and while Dread Templar is a very competent and enjoyable shooter, it doesn’t do a whole lot to carve out an identity of its own outside of being a homage. Still, if you’re into classic FPS games and want a modern title that strongly evokes the era, you could do a lot worse than Dread Templar.
I liked my time with Dread Templar, especially when the game took off and began to offer a challenge on par with the best exponents of the young retro FPS subgenre. On the other hand, I think it needed a bit of work to really stand out, perhaps by handling the upgrade system or the boss battles in a different way. In any case, Dread Templar is a good game that understands the classic fundamentals of the genre and contains adrenaline-pumping moments in polished and emotional combat.
Dread Templar is a fast paced FPS that seems like an exhilarating experience at first, but due to balance issues it doesn’t really feel all that good to play. The enemy’s heavy shots come at you from far away, while the player’s attacks don’t deal a lot of damage, which causes frustration. It can feel good to take down an enemy by throwing a katana sword or using a bow and arrows, but altogether this game is more exhausting than fun.
Competent is definitely not the worst descriptor a game can attain, but I’d be happier if Dread Templar had found a way to truly distinguish itself. When I find myself with that retro-shooter itch, I can’t see myself coming back to this one. It takes more than good gunplay to make an experience memorable, but there isn’t much more to Dread Templar than that.
This game is FPS at its best! No matter how many times you play it, you'll either crap your pants or have your mind explode out of the sheer awesomeness of this game!! Incredible puzzles, Frightful and disgusting enemies, superb dialogue, and best of all a gun like no other that allows you to turn everyday items into super destructive items of terror!!! I don't care if you're the world's greatest gamer, if you haven't played this **** haven't lived yet.
Finally a game that I would say is on par with Quake 1, in terms of its playability, speed, atmosphere, fun, dark and meaningful, although in some things it is better than Quake 1 (in its animations) there are also some things in which it could improve (horror atmosphere), however, it has quickly become perhaps my second favorite game.
Although the comparisons are unpleasant, I have tried titles like Dusk or Proteus, and no, Dread Templar is much better, it simply looks like a current game but with a lot of playability, while Proteus is clumsy to handle (it looks like a game from 30 years ago but with more or less good graphics) with Dusk, we have something similar.
Pros:
Really nice retro graphic & cool music
Unique upgrade system & challenging
Bosses. Game's atmosphere is Superb
Cons:
A few saving points are to unbalanced
(U can get stuck in a play again and...)
10/10 = For "newbies & professionals"
An enjoyable old-school fps game. Level design is not as good as "dusk". But still not bad. Episode 1-2-3 is good but the bosses of 4 and 5 are too easy. Various weapons and upgrades have added color to the game. And combat with fast gameplay is not bad. I recommend
