If it werent for the beautiful Burton-esque influence of the art direction, Spirits and Spells would just be yet another bargain bin title that isnt worth even a second glance.
-
This game is too linear. You cant stray off the patch and the fixed camera teases with a look at a delightfully rendered world, then locks you from at least seeing it from a panoramic perspective.
-
While Spirits and Spells has a great visual style and an appropriate, if repetitive, soundtrack, it is definitely a flawed game.
-
The GameCube is in dire need of some original, innovative exclusives and Spirits and Spells is far from being either of those. Instead, its more of a "Crash Bandicoot" wannabe title with poor controls that can be a major test in frustration.
-
It's cute -- but that's where the fun stops. The puzzles are unimaginative and simple, yet they're complicated by bad camera and collision detection.
-
This camera adds an unwelcome degree of challenge to the game based simply on its poor design. Now, I am all for a challenging game, but I draw the line when this challenge is based in frustration over a game's inherent flaws.
-
Features level design that would have been sub-par 15 years ago, terrible graphics, and wretched control. [Dec 2003, p.159]
