Deathloop is a creative masterpiece. Refining everything that is excellent about Arkane Studios previous titles, it takes every single dial and cranks it up to 11.

Despite these gripes, Deathloop on the PS5 offers some fantastically unique features that properly elevate the experience in new and creative ways. It’s the definitive place to play the game if you’re on console – though it’s not like you have much choice.

With a game that has players re-living the day on multiple occasions, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it would become stale. But each day plays differently as you learn clues to the visionaries and their daily patterns. And even though the Eternalists inhabit the same locations when you visit at the same time period, the skills and weapons you have acquired and imbued with Residuum allows gamers to play each section in a completely different manner. Whether you want to play a stealthy style game and methodically take out your enemies as you uncover the island’s mysteries, or blast you way through groups of Eternalists, Deathloop allows you to do so. But no matter which style you choose, it is so satisfying once you finally close the loop.

A thoughtful response to Dishonored that makes for an entertaining stealth shooter in its own right, but it's the multiplayer invasions that make Deathloop sing.

Deathloop is a welcome breath of fresh air for all fans of titles like Deux Ex, Dishonored or even Bioshock or Splinter Cell. It may in no way match the top games of the genre in terms of quality, but it still offers immersive sim entertainment and keeps the genre in the spotlight.

Deathloop turns both succeeding and failing into learning experiences and never makes you miss the lack of a quicksave option. It’s a mean feat that sets it apart from other games, and one of several reasons why it should be on the list of any immersive sim fans out there. It might not be Arkane’s best game and Blackreef may struggle clearly defining a personality for itself, but it’s certainly no stranger to great moments.

It feels sometimes like Deathloop couldn’t decide what it really wanted to be. Stealth game? Bullet opera? Retro-cool ‘60s spy romp? Mind-melting time travel story? When it tries to be all of these things at once, it ends up not being very much of anything. I liked the core concept but after twenty hours I didn’t feel like I knew more about how an island could get stuck living the same day over and over than I did at the outset.

Gameplay variety is fantastic, level design is complex like you would expect from an immersive game. Only thing I do not like is the more limited environment interactivity compared to Dishnored / Prey, but it's a minor aspect.

Cherry on the cake is the multiplayer, which is very well integrated with single player campaign (it's optional, can be turned off if you do not like it). Playing as Juliana is fanstatic, it's like being a child again and playing hide and seek, with guns this time

Graphically, it's not great to look at and the distinctive Arkane style rubs uncomfortably against the 60s vibe where it had a charm in dingy Dunwall and art deco styled Talos.

Colt is the best thing about the game. His voice actor is brilliant and gives the lines a lot of feeling. Otherwise, it's an fps centred game with a couple of marmite gimmicks which will make people confront whether they love the reality of PVP within a single player game as much as they love the idea of PVP within a single player game. And without the PVP element this is a very, very short game for the AAA price tag, even for all the repeat visits to the four areas you can explore in game.

It's a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 game, assuming you're not suffering any of the technical issues possible on PC, but I've reinstalled Prey Mooncrash already

The game is also so, so easy that's quite insulting to be honest.
    Graphics are meh.
    Story concept is interesting.

This feels like someoneI mean, the kick is more powerful than most of the guns and the enemy AI doesn't even understand how to react to it. This feels like someone took an early alpha of Dishonored and tried to do like a texture overhaul to pretend it isn't basically a modified version of Dishonored.

Kind of sad to see Arkane Studios sink even further in terms of quality. Kind of crazy that the developers responsible for making a pretty decent "Thief" inspired "Bioshock" game like "Dishonored," or an actually decent "Bioshock/ System Shock" homage like "Prey 2017," can't seem to make a functional game anymore. Bethesda being involved makes it difficult to know if it was direct sabotage, or if they genuinely released it too early. I guess we'll never know.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Of all the games that came out this and last years, she is the only one that did not tire me for all the passage. Although I'm not a fan of immersiveness, unlike Dishonored, I played differently. Stealth, rush, pacifism, and it's not that the game doesn't punish murder, but that it's just fun. In general, the gameplay is fun and interesting, the design leveled, as always, at a height in Arkane games, the sounds in the game are excellent, and the Russian voice acting is the best I've heard in the last
couple of years, even counting the Sony exclusives. You can immediately see (hear) that a lot of work was done on the errors after Prey and all the best from Dishonored was fixed.
