Expeditions: Viking spins an absolutely wonderful tale of exploration and conquest. The setting, the story, the ambiance –my imagination ran wild in ways you’d expect to experience reading a good fantasy novel. Betrayal angered me, new friendships elated me, and changing the balance of power in Britain made me feel equal parts devious and mischievous. Reconstructing my home, making it safe, strong and prosperous made me feel proud of my achievements. Every battle, every camp site and map scrubbed clean of its hidden treasures felt like it played a part in the grand scheme of things. There aren’t a lot of games that can pull something like this off even adequately. Expeditions: Vikings does it masterfully.
Viking isn't the most refined game, with limited camera control, repetitive graphics that lack detail, and a lack of high-production presentation. It nevertheless succeeds in immersing the player in its world through an intriguing main story focused on local politics and motivations and driven by realistic struggles and constraints. Viking effectively impresses upon the player its main themes about the illusion of choice and the binding chains of circumstance, and also offers a multitude of poignant side-stories and strong character development. To top it off, the game features a unique combination of combat mechanics and abilities that allow creativity and enable some very interesting and satisfying strategies, as well as a novel take in timed and deliberate progress and out-of-combat party maintenance. Players looking to take part in a realistic and historically-inspired world with an engaging politically-driven story should look past the game's lack of technical polish and definitely pick up Expeditions: Viking.
We have a lack of good RPGs in historical setting. This game is totally amazing. The story is thrilling, I had tears in my eyes a few times, atmosphere of dying pogan world is overpowering. And the music by Knut Avenstroup Haugen (composer of the Age of Conan, Conan Exiles and Lords of the Fallen) is tottally stuning, the best you can imagine!
Expeditions: Viking features some admirably nuanced turn-based combat that is in service of a larger story and interesting characters. It is a game that probably demands -- and certainly rewards -- multiple playthroughs both to gain mastery over the systems and to explore different choices in the story. Relatively minor quibbles with the game's visuals, camera, controls and occasional bugs aside, playing Expeditions: Viking is an unexpectedly rewarding experience.
Layered with enough depth and intricacy for genre veterans, but loaded with fantastic tutorials and information for newcomers, this game welcomes all types of players. A formula that has been bettered, through and through, Expeditions: Viking is an absolute joy.
Expeditions: Vikings is a fantastic role playing strategy game for those of us whom feel the need to raid and pillage. It creates an authentic social environment where traditions and customs and be enforced or forsaken, much like the gods and myths in the Norse universe. Its a bit clunky, and not very pretty, but neither were the Vikings. With a few more character portraits, and some spit and polish it could be a real gem for any gaming collection.
Viking lives in its atmosphere, so it's appreciated that most of the game is a spirited romp. For now, that experience is mangled by dozens of technical hiccups and anachronisms. At its heart lies an earnest drive to recreate a slice of Viking culture, and those looking for just that niche will find nothing better. But for everyone else, it's impossible to recommend until it's given some major help. There's a lot to be gained from stepping into the 8th century, but be prepared to have your journey hindered by bugs.
Expeditions: Viking could have been wonderful. I love its strategic combat layered atop a real world setting that hints at the fantastical without ever crossing the line. It has intriguing moral choices that aren’t afraid to shy away from making the player pick between equally terrible outcomes, and it flirts with making the player both warrior and politician. I could have overlooked the timer and the lack of information, but what I couldn’t overlook is that in its current state, the game is outright unplayable.
This is a TRUE RPG.
Since the very first moments in the game you already feel like you are living in that world thanks to the many choices and many outcomes (like in the duel with Asleifr)
You can be who you want to be: a viking that raids monasteries, a trader or even an ally of the people of England.
(It's true the game had few bugs at launch but now Logic Artists fixed everything so ,for me, it's a must-play game)
Expeditions: Viking is a brilliant RPG that deserves more love so it's a 10 for me!
Good fun "small" CRPG game.
I am danish so ofc I love vikings.
I love DnD so ofc I like CRPG games.
I would 100% recommend it on sale idk if it is 30€ worth but it is fun and intresting.
I would highly recommend to use portraits mods, sins them there is, is fine but some of the mods is just way better looking, and use the wiki | fandom to get info about the game mechanics beacuse they dont explain anything useful in the game.
I did not expect to spend as much time on this game as I did... 60 HOURS! And I skipped a couple side quests, sorry... but I thought I was close to finishing the game after spending a little too much time in the first large city you come across. Oh boy was I wrong. Most of the game does not even take place on the continent of Europe, where you as the new leader of a viking clan are based. I was THIS close to uninstalling the game when I realized this was only the beginning.
I'm not a fan of reading fiction, unless it is something very significant everybody and their mother recommends. Frankly I was caught off guard by all the reading you have to do in this game... When I first launched this game some four years after first hearing about it, I was expecting to be met with more action than I ended up getting, but honestly.. the reading-intensive gameplay grew on me and I kept going simply because I was curious about how the story was going to play out. All the important characters are essentially just a combination of static profile pictures on the UI and low-poly models in the field, but they grow on you through dialogue and storytelling.
I'll leave my personal judgments regarding shortcomings in the story out of this, but I will say that the dialogue is exceptionally well written, clearly perfected to the word. Spoken dialogue, which is rare, is usually a little awkward with accents and the pacing... But in my opinion that's irrelevant - most of the time you're reading, so everyones' voices and character are up to your imagination. Basically - if you already enjoy reading, you'll probably go through this game in half the time I spent on it and read it like an animated book of sorts. Otherwise you may feel inclined to look elsewhere. I suggest you take a chance with it, like I did.
Let me be very clear though: this is 100% an indie game and you can feel it in most aspects of the game. I am almost certain the guys behind it could do a lot more, given the resources. Combat on the hex map is innovative and entertaining, but there are some bugs, imbalances and situations in which something you'd expect to work, simply doesn't (read: "it can be unintuitive and unclear"). Stay away from the hardest difficulties in the beginning of the game unless you're looking for excuses to uninstall!
I've seen many reviewers complain about surprise rounds, which is when the turn-base combat kicks off with the enemy getting the right to perform the first attack with all of their combatants. Yes, this sometimes make zero sense, but somebody's got to start the round off and sometimes that somebody is not going to be you. Deal with it. And if you can't, simply lower the difficulty and enjoy the story. I usually challenge myself with harder difficulties, but seeing the balancing issues in this game I deicided to go through it on normal difficulty and honestly, it got a bit too easy towards the end. However you can increase the difficulty at any point if you want. I was lazy.
Overall I wouldn't thrash the game over any particular aspect of it - just don't expect perfection and you're good to go.
I have more complaints and compliments, but I'm not getting paid to write this, so I will end it here. Peace.
Less interesting and unsuccessful game compared to Rome game. It gets boring very fast and it's because of the similar gameplay mechanics in Rome. It's not fun to repeat the same thing over and over. Game developers need to understand this. Playing on maps that are too big is not fun when you can't fill it with good enough interesting quests. I'm not patient enough to finish this game, nor does it look that interesting. The game has a terrible camping mechanic. If they had spent as much time developing the main story and gameplay as they did the camp mechanics, we would have had a much better game.
An unplayable mess of bugs and a half finished combat system, it's a joke that games like this are actually released so long before they're finished. If it was a movie then the narrative would actually be good, but as a game it's just frustrating to play. Also for anyone looking for strategy/tactics in this game, it's all about luck and the rest is just boring.
SummaryCirca 790 AD. A small band of Norse warriors lands on the shores of England. History may have forgotten their names, but their actions live on. As the chieftain of your clan, let ambition guide your choices in the party-based RPG Expeditions: Viking. How will history remember you?
