The price of the game is highly reasonable given how fun it is and the extent of the content.
Here’s where Lienzo gets it right; they’re only selling Hunter’s Legacy for about five dollars. In my opinion, this is a steal. For pure entertainment value, you’re getting a lot.
Hunter’s Legacy is another platformer in a sea of platformers. Some of the puzzles are clever, going beyond jumping around to involve intriguing elements, but otherwise not much about it stands out from the crowd.
Overall Hunter’s Legacy is not a bad game, it’s just not great. It does have some very interesting Metroidvania elements and I enjoyed the sense of progression when eventually finding the correct path I was supposed to be taking. I was disappointed with the lackluster combat, which ultimately hindered my overall enjoyment.
There’s one area where Hunter’s Legacy does really shine, though, and that’s in its presentation. The environments and enemies are all pretty simple and straightforward, but the sprite art gives everything a sense of life and vibrancy. Instead of taking the severely well-trodden path of “retro” pixel graphics, Hunter’s Legacy simply takes the beauty of 2D game art and runs with it. It’s admittedly rough around the edges; it’s an indie game that doesn’t have the pristine finish of better-funded 2D games, but that just adds to its charm, in my view.
More of an amateur programming exercise than an actual game, Hunter's Legacy, a Metroidvania without a single slope, pales in comparison with almost every game of the genre in the past 30 years.
