Hollow Knight is one of the best 2D platformers I’ve ever played - it is a beautiful, quirky and dynamic game; challenging yet rewarding; mournful yet brimming with hope. When it comes to console, it’s going to cause a real stir.
Taking some hints from Dark Souls, Hollow Knight offers a solid experience through and through. It is outstanding value for money, delivering high quality content, elaborate level design and stunning attention to detail, for a low price. Without any exaggeration, it is one of the best Metroidvania games ever made and one of the most prominent titles this year.
For fans of the genre, Hollow Knight is a game you simply can’t miss. It takes what people expect in a metroidvania and polishes them up to shine radiantly. The art and animation in a game like this, no matter how beautiful, can only go so far if the backtracking and general metroidvania tropes aren’t handled well. While the backtracking can be tedious and the exploration can be maddening, Hollow Knight is still worth a look to anyone looking for a great action platformer. Hollow Knight wears its inspirations on its sleeve and reminds the world that sometimes you don’t need to create completely new mechanics, sometimes you just need to make those old mechanics shine again.
I still hesitantly recommend Hollow Knight to anyone as partial to Metroidvanias as I am, but the experience runs far longer than its visual appeal does, and at that point it becomes just another Dark Souls wannabe. It’s solid, but it demonstrates how far we still are from puzzling out From Software’s master recipe.
Hollow Knight has some great ideas and I feel like I came so close to finding it as endearing as everyone else, but far too often does it begin to feel like those deliberately frustrating platformers like Getting Over It, an un-telegraphed pit of spikes or an exploding enemy corpse can send you way back to the start of an area to redo all your progress. The art-style, combat, and world building are more than enough to make this game worth your time, but for me the frustrating platforming and aimless backtracking got in the way of something otherwise very special.
I like the game. It is big and enjoyable. So many secrets everywhere. I did 100% of the game without any help. I only use internet to find Grey Mourner and 2 charms. I am so proud from finding so many secrets even the Grimm Company. I enjoyed to much this.
Gameplay is funny. Never used the Nail Abilities. A lot of times I lost lifes but it is easy to recovered.
Lore is something i didnt like. The main story at all. Nobody is telling what to do. Or what is happening. I just found the bosses and killed them. Other npcs stories are bad but others are good.
The enemys are cool. But the bosses are boring. I like a few of them.
I like some hardcore gameplay like those challenges in the arena or whte knight. But the pantheon or extra achievements is too much time to spend. I dont want to waste other walkthroughs.
Hollow knight has good things, but navigation makes it unnecessarily long, the map is full of empty areas, you will have to deal with 80h only for travel, the full length game must be 150h...
The balance is like 99% of the game is easy and medium easy, and then there's 1 impossible particular area and 1 impossible particular boss at the very end of the game. Sure it was necessary to put those two, just in case people want to do it without glitch (they must be max 500 in the whole world). And now imagine people going to play Silksong after they beat everything in HK...?
One of the worst designed video games.
Terrible boss patterns and the checkpoint system is just awful.
It's not bad because it's hard. It's bad because you have to do the same stuff all over again because the checkpoint system/bench is AWFUL.
The only good thing about this game is the art style but that's it.
Story is bad too, like it's so cryptic.
Probably the most overhype game after Sonic Frontiers.
