Let’s Build a Zoo is a funny and intelligent take on the zoo sim that’ll have you micromanaging everything in your sight, but somehow never overwhelms. It’s cute, the music is great, and the morality system adds in replayability that can sometimes be lacking in this genre.

Let’s Build a Zoo’s comedic approach to zoo management belies just how deep it is. It isn’t perfect and I’d love a patch that halved the number of animals you need for splicing, but seeing your visitors gawp in wonder at your creations is worth the price of admission alone. The moral choices it throws at you, which aren’t all just for the sake of being evil, elevate it even further. If you’ve the slightest interest interest in sim games, you’ll have hour after hour of ethically-dubious fun with Let’s Build a Zoo.

Let’s Build a Zoo is an entertaining little title that will be an enjoyable sim for any fan of the management genre. All the details and options afforded to the player show clear thought and care, and thanks to this quality, it’s quite easy to lose track of time while creating an ideal zoo full of cute crocodile-giraffe hybrids.

To summarize, Let’s Build A Zoo is a very satisfying, darkly funny and moreish tycoon game. A few tiny glitches are the only issues with a game I imagine I’ll be revisiting many, many times over the next few months. There’s just so much to do and it does it all with a unique, macabre charm. It’s unlikely I’ll ever see all 300,000 animal hybrids you can Cronenberg together but I’ll sure have a good time making my (bacon factory) zoo along the way.

A relaxed chaos full of cute little animals that you shouldn't miss, as long as you can overlook minor bugs.

It’s a charming little game with just the right amount of “what the fuck?” to keep me on my toes for hours on end.

While being able to breed elephants with ducks sounds like fun, unlocking that part of the game will require you to play many hours of a subWhile being able to breed elephants with ducks sounds like fun, unlocking that part of the game will require you to play many hours of a sub par tycoon game. And that means: Many hours of underwhelming visuals and sound, underwhelming animal and visitor behavior as well as staff AI, and a binary system of moral choices that are not thought through and cut you off from huge parts of the content.

There is only one save slot, and you can't even save whenever you want. Meaning that you can't experiment with building a "good" or "evil" zoo. Instead you would have to start over to do that. Unlocking everything all over again, which is, as I already mentioned, not exactly a spectacular experience.

Growing your zoo also means more and more useless busywork since important quality-of-life features are missing, leading to insane micromanagement while at the same time not really managing anything. Most of those mechanics only cut into the flow and fun without having any depth to them, and overall you never feel like you achieved more than putting another checkmark behind a long, long list of similar tasks that never challenge you, and only require patience, but not skill, thinking or creativity. While a lot of interesting ideas went into this, the mix doesn't work and is dragged down by bad balancing, UI, controls and a cute, but lazy presentation.
