As Vito, you need to prove yourself by committing crimes of escalating reward, status, and consequence. But what happens when your motivations become less about necessity and more about greed? When having it all is not enough? For the first time ever, Mafia II: Definitive Edition packs the entire Mafia II crime drama into one HD package. Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is the best way to play one of the most enthralling stories of the past decade. A wonderful upgrade for a wonderful title, don’t miss it.

Mafia II Definitive Edition is still the excellent game that was on day one, with an open world not so open and a mature story. Remastering is good and the addition of all the DLC increases the contents available.

Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is a fantastic opportunity to rediscover the adventures of Vito Scaletta around Empire Bay, now with all DLC and in 4k.

Though it pulls a lot of the punches today’s open-world games freely throw, Mafia II is a time capsule in a lot of ways. Not only because its post-World War II Empire Bay lives and breathes only to have its face driven into the dirt by enterprising individuals fixated on the American dream, but because it’s a testament to the timeless, story-driven crime drama. The kind that became extinct once substance was forced to make way for Rockstar’s frenzied brand of mania.

Overall, Mafia II: Definitive Edition tells a story that is gripping and while it may not be largely unique in the span of Mafia lore, it’s one of the best available in video game form. I genuinely cared about Vito and the terrifying criminals that surrounded him. I grew to love their antics and laugh at their quirks, and feel sorry for the situations that they found themselves in. I think it’s a little unfair to class Mafia 2 as an open-world game, because the city does nothing but offer the setting for the story to g from point a to point b. If you’re looking for a city that is brimming with side quests and random activities, you won’t find them here. What you will find is a bittersweet, interesting period piece that looks at time that is not often explored in video games, and it’s a pretty damn memorable one at that.

Returning to Mafia 2 is definitely a great experience. I have understood why it was a great game ten years ago, although I think it could be better in visual terms, because it doesn't take advantage of new technologies.

There are other modern updates, I’m sure. It runs fine on my PC, and though I have seen reports of bugs and glitches, I didn’t encounter anything egregious. But there’s still a question of why. Why remake these games? Why put a fresh coat of paint on this weird little action shooter that is not so fondly remembered? I’m sure there are compelling business reasons, but nothing that makes sense to me as a gamer. Mafia II is an imperfect fix to a game that was already pretty flawed. Now it’s just as flawed, but in a way that can be appreciated by modern audiences.

Taking a look at comparison videos, a lot of the textures did get upgraded... but to less blurrier textures. At least with remasters like Burnout Paradise, every textures looks crisp and clean. However, it just seems that you are just playing the original game since many textures are still low quality and blurry. Also, none of the models were updated to higher quality ones.

Then comes the issue with Apex, and PhysX. From what I understand, NVIDIA PhysX is still there, especially since the logo is shown when you start the game, but the option to enable/disable isn't in the menus anymore. However, the Apex coat physics seem to be gone or at least disabled. Once we find out more, then I'll update this.

I'm still happy I got it for free for owning Mafia II, but for the people who were looking for a true remaster, this isn't it.
