New World is a pretty damn good MMORPG. It's fun and accessible, and though it doesn't do anything truly new, it has enough little twists on existing ideas to keep me invested.

In New World, Amazon finally has the hit it has been chasing. However, as an MMO – with a one-time entry fee – the key part is going to be if they stick around and treat the community well with thoughtful additions, instead of asking people to shell out on pages upon pages of cosmetics. The foundation is strong, and if nothing else, it feels good to batter things with a spear.

While young and not perfected, New World is Amazon's first hit, a MMORPG with some classic aspects to it while others are refreshing. Its action gameplay, craft and endearing world building make for a pleasant journey, especially with no subscription. The rest will depend on Amazon capacity to entertain its community in the month to come.

I was admittedly surprised with how thoroughly I enjoyed my time with New World. From the freeform character and weapon progression to the resource gathering and faction dynamics, there’s a lot to explore and experience. That said, New World very much feels like an MMO in a very early state. There’s not a ton of Expeditions, there’s no mounts, and there’s an obvious need for balancing with features like Siege. Luckily, MMOs often get better as they age, and if Amazon Games can build upon this great foundation, they’ll have a surefire hit on their hands.

I can’t recommend New World to anyone who isn’t already 100% invested in the idea of faction politics and PvP, but there’s a solid foundation here. Give it an expansion or two, and this could turn into something truly special.

New World is an mmo that could be straight out of 2010. It hardly adds any new ideas to the genre and therefore feels dated in content. The faction system offers interesting possibilities for wars between players, but is not yet balanced. New World demands a lot of time from its players, but does not actually give anything in return that we have not seen before. Graphically, everything is fine, and although the game has microtransactions, they are only of a cosmetic nature. There is no subscription: for the entrance fee, the entire base game is open to you.

A stellar crafting experience and surprisingly slick combat aren’t enough to compensate for the flaws in New World’s humdrum and frustrating quest design.

The distinct lack of new MMOs makes New World one of the better massively multiplayer games to come online in recent years.

That's not to say it's a great game. But it's good enough to be diverting for a while. And in this environment, that's enough to give it an 8 instead of a 5 or 6 that it would earn in direct competition with MMOs that have been out for a decade or more.

    What's good about New World?

First, it has a top notch gathering/craft system that makes travel/exploration worthwhile. New World is one of the few MMOs where you can walk out of town, chop down a forest, cut it into lumber, then craft some weapons or furniture from it. Overall, I've found this part of the game to be quite enjoyable and probably the only genuinely unique thing about New World.

The weapons/combat system is solidly engaging. Actives/passives are based off of the type of weapons you use and your choices of specialization. It's got a lot of room for expansion and fine-tuning, but it's pretty good as is.

Travel is slow. A lot of folks complain about the lack of mounts and the Azoth (resource) cost of fast travel. As I said before though, the gathering aspect of the game makes this palatable. If you're picky on your gathering, you're not going to enjoy the travel though. If you gather, make sure you have the +Azoth chance perk on your tools and, combined with your Inn and a house or two, Fast Travel won't be so bad,

The quests are typical. Go kill mobs and/or loot their chests for quest items. Nothing new or surprising the whole way through. Stay in your level range +/- 3 and it's all fairly easy to solo without reading the text or really having to think about anything other than efficient travel.

For me, the biggest flaw of the game is that it doesn't really change. From your first 10 levels to your last 10 levels, you're fighting the same few NPCs -- boars, bears, wolves, bobcats, cougars, crocodiles and a surprisingly limited variety of undead pirates.

I guess you could toss in rabbits, buffalo, goats, sheep, elk and turkeys too. But all those are really just there to be hunted as they wander around. Rabbits and turkeys are one-shot kills at every level, so you can't even really count them at all.

I'd say the game has roughly a dozen distinct fighting enemies from beginning to end. Only the names and levels change. That was a problem with Dark Age of Camelot when it released in 2002. But New World makes that game seem like a living Monster Manual by comparison.

At Level 1 you're killing boars and undead pirates with your wooden sword. At high levels, you're killing boars and undead pirates with a legendary weapon that doesn't look or feel much different. Your armor has improved, but it's probably not all that striking either. You can dye it, but the colors don't really pop enough to make that exciting. And no matter what you do to look good, you'll be outdone by a low level who just paid for the visuals

In the end, we're left with a leveling trip that was fun enough, especially when no one seems interested in launching big MMOs anymore. But it's not the kind of fun that really makes players excited to do it all again.

New Worlds is like it is made from an inexperienced game dev with 5 people, who never played a MMO before.
The graphics are fine, the UI and crafting system is great, but it is seriously lacking content and polish everywhere else. This issue is especially noticeable with the questing system, where you have the same fetch/kill quest only. Together with the three group dungeons, this is more or less the PvE content of the game. Sadly, in all PvE encounters, you have only the same reskinned enemy types.
But maybe I am unfair. Maybe, besides the advertisement, New World is meant for PvP not PvE. Well, PvP sucks. One faction usually controls the server (syndicate, if you didn't know) and gets all the benefits from it. You can do the literally same three quests for each city to try to steal the control away from the overpowered faction. If you then control their fort, you can declare war on them. In the war, the fifty best people from the faction can fight for dominance over the city. Cool and all, but it is not likely that you are chosen for the fight with 2000 players on the server possible competing for the positions.
Open world PvP is imho pointless. Even though your attributes are adjusted when you fight higher players, the benefits from their weapons skill points and equipment is unreal. If you are not with a strong group, you often get ganked, if you don't manage to run away. As a "motivation" you get 5% more XP. Why bother.
Running is the next point. Fast travel is expensive and there are no mounts. You will run a lot, since the quests, your way of levelling, making you run non-stop from point to point for minutes. Once, I had to travel for half an hour because of a quest. I kid you not. It is a ridiculous waste and disrespect of your time.

    Tl;dr
I think all the money went into marketing to try to make a win of a failed game. They succeeded. Don't add to it and buy it. It disrespects your time and is just not worth it. Play ESO, if you like Story, GW2, if you like PvP and fantastic mounts, or any other MMO.

Terrible design and gameplay choices killed off a promising game with a great world and nice engine.

You can spend days trying to get a group together and it is likely they will be trying something they have no chance of doing because the competent tanks quit out of frustration or boredom. Those that can dps stay quiet and instead go dps. Being a tank is boring and thankless. It is one of 2 classes that cant participate in PVP effectively because pvp has become so divergent that it is a separate game and dps, in comparison with tanks and healers are massively out of balance with them. So they become largely pve classes. But with no tanks, there is no pve and no groups. You can spend days waiting for nothing. Everyone is so bored with minute amount of end game content and the cheap and low effort repetitiveness of the same dungeons over and over and none more so than tanks (in particular) and healers. You could make other characters but the way they made the game is so badly designed that you need banks and banks full of equipment for equip one (Angry Earth Ward, Corruption Ward, Ancient Ward, Lost Ward and PVP if you aren't a tank or healer or just want to do it anyway. Trying managing that lot. It is bad enough for one, let alone two or three classes. So they managed to push enough tanks out that it is no longer viable at all and nothing left to do. It has been talked about for a year and they did nothing to stop it even as more and more left or respecced.

Not region locking is huge. When you don't have any ability to communicate with anyone else it is making it feel like you are basically playing with bots. That is the number one flaw and it effects everything else.

I love the world they created. It is amazing. I played a lot of hours but a lot of it I am just farming while watching netflix or amazon to be honest. Though it is nice to have it open and craft etc while doing something else. To be honest, it badly lacks content otherwise.

On a gaming level. I have literally played almost every online MMO since everquest 1 beta onward and this is the most obviously class delineated pvp game since then. There are pvp classes, and those that are nerfed into oblivion. Unfortunately, several classes are really tedious to play because they are at a disadvantage in pvp (healer/tanks). Yet the game needs more healers and tanks to survive. Because they didn't fix this, getting groups is a real nightmare and I have been through three servers now because they merged following a server population crash. Every one of them you lose friends and concentrates the bot population and off service sellers.

Massive amounts of different armour sets for each role you play. It is sheer hell and very quickly becomes unwieldy and boring to manage switching and endless managing of your various banks.

Fortunately, though it takes a huge amount of time and grind, you could respec. ( Most just leave ). It is just generally a massively repetitive grinding experience.

I do like the style and the graphics, big time. It is beautiful. The crafting is also very broad yet in some ways just not worth it for some skills (armourer). But the content was designed by folk without seemingly understanding how normal people might engage with it or appreciate a forced and tedious grind without new things to do in the end.

PvP is a stun locking affair and in the main, it is as much down to which class you are and whether you kept up to date with the youtube and so on sites telling you what the current meta is. The focus on ranged is an obvious one and it is disappointing that they don't seem to get that this is a problem as old as Everquest 1!.
It begins with creating the right sort of build and gear and understanding the skills and builds you are likely to be fighting. But it is not very rewarding in practical terms either, so pvp feels a bit pointless half the time as it is a side show and limited by class and the very repetitive and unrewarding battlegrounds. It's almost like 2 separate games.
