This game actually upsets me in some level, because it's everything we wanted Mighty No. 9 to be, but we didn't get. However, I believe it was worth the wait, as this game is the Megaman game we wanted so bad, with retro visuals, slick 60 FPS performance, and fun gameplay and level design. The game does have a slow start, and some levels do feel tedious at times, but the overall experience is great.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst is another homerun from Comcept. Just like Mighty No. 9, it introduces tough as nails levels with bosses that have difficult-but-satisfying to dominate patterns. Soundtrack is kickass, and the amount of content here for a $10 eShop game is just... just so freaking good. Give this game a shot, you won't be disappointed.
As a **** for games with high customizablity, and an even bigger **** for Mega Man, combine both and-- You get Mighty Gunvolt Burst, What Mighty No. 9 was supposed to be.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst is an overall fun and fitting tribute to retro 2D action games that stars two recent heroes in the genre. Although you won't be playing it for years to come, it's still a worthwhile entry in one of the most classic genres in gaming.
The whole effort is leaps and bounds ahead of Mighty No. 9, perhaps owing to the lack of fanbase threatening to withdraw their support if the game wasn’t at least 90 per cent similar to Mega Man. Mighty Gunvolt Burst suffers some early shakiness trying to find its own voice, but it’s not long before the game will win you over.
If it wasn't for its faithful retro presentation and soundtrack, Mighty Gunvolt Burst would be a pretty forgettable and by the numbers Mega Man clone. This is fine for children who are just getting into 2D run-and-gun action since, at the time of this review, there is no Virtual Console on the Nintendo Switch. The best part of playing Inti Creates' latest release is just experimenting with the possible combinations to make all kinds of wonderful weapons of death.
Enjoyable and if you lke retro megaman games then this is a must buy... only annoying thing is that you have to find most power ups and beck is missing half his normal abilities(dash, charge)
The reviews from the critics are pretty atrocious, they come into the game with a weird ego driven/nostalgia mindset that's unsettling. putting that aside this game does a lot of things right, it plays really well, and although it copies many elements from mega-man it has some unique puzzles here and there that keep the game interesting. also the price point is spot on at $10, which is a great price for the game. i highly recommend if you want a decent side scroller.
This is a fairly solid NES Mega Man throwback and I'd say that it's worth it for the low price if it looks like something you'd be into. there's I think 13 levels, each with a fun boss fight, which can be made much easier by customising your weapon with an element that they're weak to. You can customise your weapon and character quite a bit in this game, with the options for size of the bullet, bullet sprite, damage multiplier, firing rate etc..
You can also upgrade your character to take less damage, perform a double jump and more. there's even an option where falling down a pitfall won't lead to insta-death but will just take health. With these upgrade options the game can be made extremely easy to the point that you feel like you're cheating. With my fully upgraded OP Gunvolt, the boss rush level and final boss at the end were a breeze compared to the beginning of the game when I just had my peashooter and was dying multiple times on each level. Strangely, a lot of these upgrades are found by simply replaying each level. meaning that to be most efficient, you'll want to play each stage two times in a row so that you can get the element to use against the next boss.
Ultimately I had fun, but I do think that you're given too much freedom in terms of customisation. If you want a challenge, there are in game achievements for sticking with the peashooter and no upgrades and finishing the game in under an hour, which will presumably give you a more authentic Mega man experience.
There's now a third character that you can play as via DLC; Ekoro from Gal Gun! The three characters means that there's replay value here, but I don't think that there's enough reason to make me want to replay each level so many times over. The gameplay is fairly simplistic most of the time.
So yeah, I'd recommend it for the price. I haven't played Mighty Number 9, but from what I've heard, Mighty Gunvolt Burst is the true Mega Man successor. And I'll be picking up the Azure Striker Gunvolt pack when it comes out on Switch for the Mega Man X style of gameplay.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst is actually a merger of Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty No. 9 from development team Inti Creates, a company formed in 1996 entirely of ex-Capcom employees.
You may not be fully aware of Inti Creates but you will have certainly played one of their games. From the Mega Man Zero series, and Mighty No. 9 to having a hand in Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Inti Creates are a very well established group.
We are all aware of what Mighty No. 9 is and what a disaster the entire project was (so we will gently side-step this delicate subject), but you might not be as up to speed on the less well known Azure Striker Gunvolt.
This 2014 title was released on Nintendo 3DS and Windows, with a forthcoming release on Nintendo Switch this coming August. A sequel ‘Azure Striker Gunvolt 2‘ spawned late 2016 for 3DS, and has also been announced for Nintendo Switch. Similar in style to Mega Man, Azure Striker Gunvolt brings most of what’s good about our little blue friend and adds the ability to tag multiple enemies, speedruns etc.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst follows the conventional Mega Man route of ultra hard stages, each with their own unique feel and flavour, concluded with the obligatory boss battle. There’s ice and water, fire and industrial, windy sections and invisible platforms, spikes and drops, moving platforms and hidden rooms. Each level feels miles away from the last you just clawed your way through, chucking coin after coin into the swear jar as you did so. The HUD pokes at you by displaying how many attempts you’ve been through. I found myself rarely glancing at this as it serves more like that guy in the cinema who keeps playing on his phone.. you just try to pretend it’s not there. It can be turned off, but that’s like patching over a war wound, right?!
You’ll be able to pick either Beck (Mighty No. 9) or Gunvolt, each play slightly different from one-another, so it’s worth having two game-saves on the go simultaneously.
Weapon customisations in the game are plentiful and can change the outcome of a boss battle you’ve had particular difficulty with, so experiment with shot-type, pattern, angle, reflection etc.
There’s nothing overly unique about the package as a whole, but it all sits together to make a very well-rounded game of infuriating difficulty, albeit incredibly satisfying. It’s got ultra-tight controls and enough customisation to ensure you get the most from your money.
Coming in at an absolute bargain bin low of £8.99 and taking mere seconds to download and install, if you’re looking for that retro-styled Mega Man-y flavour on your Nintendo Switch, you should absolutely grab this. If you are a die hard Mega Man fan who is looking for a Mega Man game, then this may just anger you a little… or not.. in either case, the Nintendo Switch was screaming for a game like this.
As with all Mega Man type games, the reward from the genre comes from practice… plenty of practice. Lot’s of muscle memory is key here. I’ve rage quit Mighty Gunvolt Burst many, many times now with what I’d call ‘cheap kills’, although in the back of my mind I know I am just not good enough yet. I happily slapped down my £9 on this as I know I will return to the game time and time again. It has that retro feel about it I just cannot help but admire.
SummaryThe game systems have been completely revamped and powered up with lots of new additions, including a deep character customization system that lets you mold and shape your character into the ultimate hero that works best for you.
