Narita Boy is a feat of imagination, one of the most conceptually interesting games I’ve ever played. The retro world of the Digital Kingdom – its pixelart, design and art direction – are some of the most eye-catchingly beautiful ever committed to code. Its soundtrack is mesmerising, truly special synthwave. Narita Boy ends up more than the sum of its parts, going beyond the source code to deliver a game that should take its place alongside the greatest indies.

If it isn't already clear, Narita Boy is a great indie adventure. It's got satisfyingly slick gameplay, and the visuals are a delight. But perhaps the true star of the show is the stellar electronic soundtrack. Whether it's twinkling ambient tunes or booming synth chords, the music is superb.

A thoroughly entertaining and highly playable Metroidvania, that goes beyond being a simple retro homage and offers some memorable gameplay twists and storytelling surprises.

Narita Boy feels like a completely unique experience and the first step for a new collection of games based around this digital aesthetic. The soundtrack here is flawless and the way everything plays into its setting and narrative is just as good. The gameplay might slog at times and not quite hit the mark, but Narita Boy is something you shouldn't miss.

Despite any perceived difficulties experienced in Narita Boy, all can be forgiven if you enjoy a world that immerses itself completely in the tech of a bygone era. There’s something to be said about racing against the digital wind on a CRT-horse in a pixelated world that looks like the SNES Star Wars game but feels like that infamous Battletoads level. If you know that exact vibe I’m talking about, you gotta check out Narita Boy. After all, the fate of the Digital Kingdom rests in your hands.

Narita Boy could be the peak of the genre, but it is constantly being pulled down by not-that-good controls and unnecessary backtracking. What it does right is boss fights and its whole digital-computer games based world.

Narita Boy's extraordinary style and presentation is let down by hollow exploration and one-note combat.

In reality it is a masterpiece of contemporary videogaming and not only for the graphics and music (incredible), but for all the citations it is strongly imbued with. It's not a 10 for just a few small burrs. But Narita boy exudes love and passion from all pixels. Rarely have I seen so much passion behind a work, which in part also wants to be self-congratulatory and self-quoting. It starts slowly, but slowly takes flight. Stratospheric pixel art, soundtrack that gradually becomes more and more grandiose, fantastic animations. Incredible amount of scenes and backgrounds, crazy atmosphere. New age technology and spiritualism. Very funny combat system after the first stages, the only drawback: perhaps too much written narration. But brilliantly: the metaphor of the world inside programming and of the bits compared with the spirit. Partly even moving. A great little masterpiece.
(take care since here > spoiler > ) The ending of the game is one of the cutest I've ever seen. There is a soundtrack song specifically singed for the game, not just at the beginning, and it's musically fantastic. The quote from "to be continued" in Japanese is great ... :-))))) So will be continue?

Well, II donated a few dollars back when it was on Kickstarter because I loved the art style. Years go by and I completely forgot about it. Well, I recently bought it on the PS4 store during a holiday sale and let me say, it was worth every cent and more. There is nothing bad about this game, only a few hiccups and a couple of crashes but nothing that ruined the experience as the checkpoint system is very generous.

Now let me explain why I gave Narita Boy a 9, despite its fairly simple combat and exploration. Why I gave it such a high score is the initial reason I was invested in the Kickstarter back when. The ART STYLE! Art style, atmosphere, graphics, design choice...whatever you want to call it is just OOZING with passion. You can absolutely tell the creators made this as a labour of love. Tiny details spatter this pixelated landscape and shine with an aesthetic of digital/80's/synthwave. It just nails that aesthetic so perfectly, you can't help but fall in love. The story is simple, the combat is simple, the exploration is minimal, and the world is just so gosh-darned PERFECT. The music is a perfect match to the visuals as well. When that battle theme starts playing, you feel your veins flow with neon and code, strengthening your resolve and injecting you with some digital adrenaline that pumps you up to the max!

Go in this game not looking for a metroidvania, or a highly complex systems game with lots of loot. It is a streamlined experience, but one that your eyes and ears will thank you for. Enjoy the 6-8 hours of eye candy and appreciate it as a digital art piece that you can play. That is my recommendation.

A simple concept developed by a debuting studio. It seems to follow the steps of games like Blasphemous or Hollow Knight, and it works. This story is written in a way I did not expect, full of intriguing commentary and thought provoking Lore. Its biggest suprise for me was the flow the retro-funk OST had, full of twists and turns that a Sci-fi work needs to captivate the player. This game is simple in essence, but its visual and gameplay execution is near to flawless. I look forward to experiencing it's post v1.01 features as there asre some little tweaks that would make this a very well rounded game. I give this a 9/10 for its incredible aesthetic, it's amazing music, it's very fun and varied bossfights and a surprisingly well rounded execution for a Kickstarter Debut game. An instant classic for me! Expand

To be fair, at the beginning I really thought it would be what I was waiting for. Its a really nice Hommage to the 80s... At least for what I have Seen But after 2 hours of Gameplay I got stuck in the Hall of Memorys... No Chance to escape ... Had a couple of Blue Screens too. Only Option: Start over again not knowing what will be the next gambreaker...so sad!!! Thats it for me... Not worth my time!!
UPDATE: The programmers are about to Patch the Bug. So wait definately till the patch is out.
