Although she was quite knowledgeable about magical books, she had never seen anything like it. After making sure no one was around, she stroked the cover with her finger.

    "Book...King? I guess I'll try reading it."

She pulled up a chair, took a seat, and got ready to open the book.
It was unbeknownst to her, however, that this would mark the beginning of an incident that would involve all of Gensokyo.

Touhou Double Focus is a quirky Metroidvania that offers fun and challenging gameplay. This isn’t the first game that requires the player to switch between two different play styles, but the simplicity in doing so does enhance the exploration aspect of the beautifully designed areas of the book world. While not incredibly long, this doesn’t feel incomplete since each area is filled with many nooks and crannies to explore with secrets to find. Time attack and replaying boss fights adds to the replay value and certain trophies need to only be attempted by the most masochistic of gamers.

Touhou Double Focus is a solid Metroidvania experience that's held back by its sheer mediocrity. If it had more streamlined gameplay then it would be a notable addition to the genre but at least Touhou fans can find something to love in its charming world.

Touhou Double Focus shows a decent amount of promise with its reliance on character swapping and willingness to just be weird. That said, stiff controls and frustrating hitboxes certainly bring the overall game down quite a bit. Still, Double Focus has a lot of personality and I had a good time seeing it through to the end. It’s not as strong as Touhou Genso Wanderer, but still a decent enough adventure, if a bit rough around the edges.

Touhou Double Focus is a Touhou Metroidvania. It's honestly hard to describe it any better than that. If that doesn't sound like something you absolutely must buy, then you probably shouldn't. If either of those words provokes a strange compulsion in you though, it's a charming game that's enjoyable to play for its incredibly brief duration.

There are some really great ideas found within Touhou Double Focus, but they aren’t fully executed here. The gameplay needs to be tighter if it’s going to focus on difficulty, and it pales in comparison to other difficult platformers like Shantae. If you get this as part of the physical copy of Touhou Genso Wanderer then by all means check it out, but Double Focus leaves a lot to be desired by itself.
