WWE 2K Battlegrounds is definitely not the perfect arcade-style WWE experience, but it’s a far better game than I expected going in with minimal bugs and issues. As a workprint for the future, it’s rock-solid and can easily lead to the Battlegrounds games being a great breather between simulation-based entries in the series going forward. Hopefully we’ll see things like customizable movesets be added into future installments – but as it stands, this is a great way to enjoy some pick up and play WWE action on any gaming platform you have.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the best WWE game in a long time. Its over-the-top combat leans heavily on cartoon violence, so if you’re looking for a wrestling sim, you won’t find that here. What you will get, though, is a fun, fast-paced, and lighthearted wrestling game.

Battlegrounds is a fun little game for WWE fans. It lacks the depth of other brawlers, although if you like the competition it is based on we think you’ll enjoy it.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is not a bad game but we believe that its true potential has not been exploited in the least.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is more focused on casual players who look for a fun, simple multiplayer experience. However, the game lacks value in its content, not to mention its tendency to drive you to pay to unlock characters.

Far less stuffy than the mainline WWE 2K series and designed for quick bursts of entertaining casual play with friends, WWE 2K Battlegrounds lack of depth and technical issues sadly undercut its energetic audiovisual presentation. Hardly the sequel to WWE All-Stars that so many wanted, WWE 2K Battlegrounds could simply be so much more - but it just... isn't.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is a game that seems like it exists purely to house its storefront, offering predatory microtransactions which would be overly pricy in a free-to-play game. In a paid title - even a budget one - they're offensive. The only silver lining here is that the game is rubbish anyway, so feel free to skip it without feeling like you're missing out.

The devs now have a harder battle to face with WWE 2k22, as what budget it had originally had was cut in half by WWE, who want games made about their company and made good. This game shows regardless of how much potential it had, any game under 2K will always turn out the same: A low effort(at least on the 2K end), heavily monetized piece of crap.

    Full Score Breakdown

Story: 3/10 - The same story WWE games tell: Take some no name lumps and watch as they beat the piss out of the entire roster despite no professional training and make it to Wrestlemania.

Graphics 6/10 - The graphics on their own look fine enough for an arcade type of WWE game. The cartoonification of a hefty amount of men and almost all the women has turned them into monstrosities.

Sound: 2/10 - With half assed commentary and minimal sound outside of that, there’s no reason to not play this on mute.

Gameplay: 5/10 - Gameplay is a bit basic and screwey at the same time. Collision detection is a mess, and the ai is pretty poor and predictable, leading to fast and easy wins.

Fun Factor: 4/10 - The game is pretty fun in small doses. More so with friends.

Stability: 4/10 - Infrequent frame dropping, but when it happens it’s almost game crashing. When lifting opponents or being lifted the game will tend to not position the wrestler correctly. It will correct itself but on rare occasion can lead to both wrestlers teleporting across the stage. The game will glitch at least once per match.

Game Vs Service 2/10 - You can play some of the game offline, but the game has been completely built with a free to play economy and a heavy emphasis on playing online. Everything costs in game currency to unlock, which you can earn or buy with real money.

Start To Finish: 1/10 - Depending on your skill at wrestling games and how quickly you learn the cpu’s low intelligence you can quickly blast through the game’s campaign in under 10 hours with countouts and rapid button presses.

Longevity: 3/10 - The game has live service elements to keep you around longer, but unless you have friends to play with, or are desperate to play a current wrestling game, most wont last much longer after the campaign.

Worth: 2/10 - ($40 base price) With so few options, achievements, and no platinum trophy, this game is only worth about $10.

Gave it a 1 because it does run. Most regrettable game purchase I've ever made and i would feel the same at 15$, but this game is 40$ wGave it a 1 because it does run. Most regrettable game purchase I've ever made and i would feel the same at 15$, but this game is 40$ w microtransactions and it doesnt even offer any online matchmaking which is insane. I thought tag team would be fun, good luck finding 3 ppl you already know who were also dumb enough to buy this game. The roster is just ok, creating a wrestler is generic and pointless. It got old after about an hour, the gameplay is stale, terrible collision, limited movesets. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am not happy I have to be online just to get currency to unlock characters in the store . That is highly unfair . 2k playgrounds 2 did not need this just to earn currency or use the in game character store please fix this . I've just bought the game today and this is very disappointing . And until you fix it I will not play it again as I have no internet at home and no way to acres the store I can't bring my console to my local library to play it on. Also I would like to say that you need internet for everything from buying new characters to customising your own and arenas
The worst part is you get 0 currency unless you have internet so it's effectively blackmail
