20XX is a fantastic title and shows that the classic formula of Mega Man games still works. Stop reading and go play it now!
Despite how hard this game is, that isn’t a mark against it – very much the opposite in fact. Megaman games have always been incredibly challenging and anything that tries to give the same feel as those needs to be just as difficult. 20XX does an incredible job of balancing this given its roguelike nature. It’s a worthy successor to any of the old games, it is the game that Megaman fans have been waiting for, and quite simply it does what it does spectacularly.

This game doesn't get enough respect. The soundtrack is easily the best 8 bit soundtrack in existence. If you don't believe me feel free to look up the OST on youtube and that alone is worth the price of admission. The game can be challenging at first, but if you put in the time to learn the mechanics and conquer the learning curve, you will be having so much fun you get fired from your job cuz you decided to stay up all night on a bender playing this game..! speaking for a friend of course.

20XX is the perfect indie love letter to the Mega Man X franchise, while showing its indie roots with a committed "roguelite" design, where you'll start the whole game over again once you die, but earn the ability to unlock more items as you go.
It finds a way to marry both in a manner that comes across frantic, fast-paced and challenging each time.
Taking control of two starting characters with ranged or melee attacks, you'll dash your way through various levels of randomized tilesets and increasing difficulty to take down 8 monster robots, optionally take on their powers, and hopefully escape the facility.
What 20XX lacks in any kind of deep lore or history, it makes up for with sheer high-octane action platforming.. once you get used to it at least. Expect quite a bit of a learning curve, and you'll be soaring through levels in no time.
20XX is more than worth the price of admission if this seems like something that would interest you, and you miss the dash and wall-climb action of the X series.
Just prepare to die a lot while learning the ropes, and if you're new and find things too rough, play on Revenant difficulty until you get used to how it all works.
Granting 9 out of 10 ony because updates on Switch are slower to come out than on PC, and the game looks slightly blurrier than the original PC version, but runs just as smooth.

Part of the reason why 20XX exists is Capcom’s negligence of the Mega Man series. Batterystaple Games has successfully taken the Mega Man X formula one step further by adding in roguelike mechanics, essentially giving the game infinite replay value.
Playing 20XX has an addictive rhythm to everything. You dive into the level, find loot like upgrades and currency bolts, kill bosses to take their weapons, and keep pushing until you die. After dying we’d often suffer from that 'just one more run' itch that’s so common in roguelikes and the formula fits an action platformer like 20XX perfectly. The procedural engine does a good job of mixing things up, but after a while you can start to see a little repetition, but that’s easily overshadowed by the sheer variety and amount of upgrades and customisation.
There’s a lot of fun be had here, a great challenge for those looking for a new retro-style platformer like this to take on, but 20XX never truly finds that “retro” charm. Instead, it’s a new idea pretending to be a retro experience, and the more astute players out there will be able to sniff it right out.
Despite its inconsistent level make-ups and underwhelming boss designs, 20XX is still an engrossing side-scroller that perfects the feeling of navigating dangerous, pitfall and enemy-filled stages.
20XX is a game that controls nicely and surely felt needed and relevant back when it hit Early Access in 2014, but just winds up feeling underwhelming.
paid 5,79€ in 2024. Very good game for the price. A good Megaman like, with a good replayability. The graphics are simple but good.
A buy it twice, to play with my son on local wireless when traveling.
Maybe in my top 5 local wireless game.

This game is terrible. There is barely any progression in 20xx. When I bought a couple of upgrades, I can't even buy anymore because the does give me enough soul chips.(which is the currency for permanent upgrades.) All of my currents runs feel useless. The level design is terrible. I know that it is randomly generated. I always die near the end of the run because the game gets really unfair. Enemys shooting in every direction, Lasers everywhere, platforms moving like crazy. One time when i left the glory zone(bonus room) the enemy's projectiles was already out and i died. Wtf? I didn't even get to move. This the first game in a long time where i regret buying in just a few days. It **** beacause were poor and i can not buy games left and right. Save your money. There are better games that deserve your money. I wish i could get a refund.
