For the Glory of the Arcade Times!

The tears of a young witch have been turned into a key by a demon to open a gateway to hell. In Cursed Castilla, one takes the role of Don Ramiro, a knight appointed by King Alphonse VI, to fight and banish the evil invading the lands of Tolomera.

Don Ramiro will face mouras, ojáncanos, nuberus and malismos: creatures from the European folklore, as well as from chivalric romances such as Amadís de Gaula.

For that, one will use a different range of weapons to defeat the enemies, in a pure classic arcade action style.

Cursed Castilla is an acclaimed modern arcade both by critics and players with a 81 Metascore.

Cursed Castilla EX is a fun and challenging retro style title that will delight players looking for a challenge. A great tribute to the great game in which it is inspired.

Cursed Castilla EX remains a fantastic and tough platformer. The look is authentically retro, and the controls are as tight as ever. The challenge is ever-present, but nothing feels unfair, except for the requirements to get the "good" ending. The game feels like it comes in at just the right length. For adventure platformer fans, Cursed Castilla EX certainly belongs in their library.

While mostly similar to the version that appeared on 3DS in 2017, the Nintendo Switch iteration of Cursed Castilla EX is still well worth a play. Perfectly designed for bite-sized runs on the go, its careful balance of skilful challenge and easy-to-learn controls means almost anyone can pick it up and start throwing swords in vigor. Whether you’re a retro fan looking for a love letter to classics such as Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts or a newbie looking to see what the fuss is all about, this is a great little adventure.

There’s a lot to love about Cursed Castilla EX. From its innovative use of classic source material for its narrative to the bold, intricate pixel art that makes up its visuals, Cursed Castilla EX hits all the right notes. Innovation can be difficult with the sorts of games that have existed from the days of NES to now, but in the hands of creative developers like Locomalito and his companion Gryzor87, it’s clear that there’s plenty left to mine when a project is handled with care. Absolutely consider giving Cursed Castilla EX a look the next time you’re perusing the Switch (or 3DS!) eShop.

Cursed Castilla does not try to open new paths, this is a simple, intense, action game based on extremely tough games of past ages. This is a simple effort that's fun and very challenging and doesn't go beyond that. As Cursed Castilla tries to follow the examples of some tough-as-nails classics, it also does little to set itself apart and as such, this fun and simple game is also rather limited in what it brings.
