I created a metacritic account just for this. This game is a downgrade from the gamecube version.
TLDR: Lost the mario golf magic, less fun, less precision, less unique and difficult courses. Not worth $90 CAD.
-Adventure mode is too short. but was enjoyable. -Not enough courses. only 6, and the first 2 are basically the same. so 5 courses. -Courses do not have that special uniqueness

-Courses do not have that special uniqueness and difficulty that the other games offered.
-The loss of viewing trajectory really hampers the enjoyment of lining up really difficult shots, But there aren't many of those difficult situations on these courses anyways.
-The new curve mechanic has potential, you can curve more, but it's less precise and reliable.
-The main characters have surprisingly weak stats. (referring to super backspin not doing much and not many curve bars)
-Why no taunting? it's was a fun little feature in the last ones.
    -No super top spin

The fact that they reused the victory/loosing animations from birdies and bogeys across every other type of hole outs (hole in ones, eagles, triple bogeys etc.), the game courses lack the Mario uniqueness of them, with only a few being good enough for that, the fact that the "supershots" are unbalanced and inconsistent since less than half of the roster gets unique attributes to their special shots while the rest of the roster gets the generic Blast away special, and its not like they didn't have material to pull from. World tour had such a great set of starting courses, unique and creative victory animations and overall better gameplay. It's truly sad hoe the game lacks n personality like this and that most of this stuff that is missing from the game will probably never come to the game in any of the "free" updates. Not to mention the short adventure mode that disappoints beyond belief in my opinion, it started out great and I was expecting to continue on with what it set but half way through it I became bored and it felt more like a task rather than a source of entertainment. My only wish is that they fix some of the issues I and other players have in future updates. Also I'm mad that we can't taunt other players like we used to in Toadstool tour, I know that Nintendo wants to approach more family friendly terms with this, But it could easily be a setting to turn on and off these taunts, which lead to my next complaint which is more of a nitpick, but its that the characters are not very expressive, this goes along with my complaint about the animations/victory screen where the characters barely say anything, from what I can remember, the most a character has talked in the game was Daisy when she says "Whatever" in her Bogey/loosing animation or Rosalina's "Oh Boy" in the same situation, these I find are very good expressions from these characters but having it as every single loosing animation makes them feel dull, with Daisy saying "whatever" gives her some of that sass that she had back in the day and that she still has but has been dulled down as of recent years, I would have loved to see her rage in madness when she gets a triple bogey or do cartwheels in while creating fields of flowers and plants when getting a Hole-In-One. When I started playing and got my first eagle I felt really excited at first because of my accomplishment, but then I saw the character I was playing as, in that case Wario, do the same animation I had already seen for his birdie celebration screen, it made me sad and I was shocked to see that they all suffered the same fate. I don't know if this is Camelot's doing or Nintendo's, but I, along many others, am tired of this recent takes that have been doing on recent Mario Games were it's all more simplified, minimalistic, dull, and overall lacking of the Mario personality, and What worries me the most about this is the fact that This has been going on for a while and I don't want this to take effect on future installments. For example, The Mario Strikers Games are know for being really chaotic and excitement, One of the things that stand out from these games to me is the intros and interactions characters have between each other, basically talking smack to the opponent before starting the match, I fear that things like this would be replaced with more friendly and non interesting intros were the characters wouldn't even interact with each other. Anyways Going back to Mario golf, I still think it's a good game, though as of now, it is not worth the price it's got, and I fear that the updates won't be enough to make the game good enough to reach that price tag. I personally Mario Sports Tittle shouldn't be more than $50, unless they have enough content to justify the price tag. Would I recommend this game? Skeptical yes, but I'd recommend waiting for some of those "free updates" to buy it or wait until it goes n discount. Expand

Much rather play any previous Mario golf games, hot shots golf/everybody's golf, pangya or Swing Away golf before this. There's more issues but this is all the time I want to spend on this review Expand

The actual golf is about as watered down as possible, no real emphasis on setting up your shot which is the best part of playing golf games, it's more of a luck based experience with you trying to watch a bar and press A at the right time, the luck aspect is due to the "danger zone" mechanic where your strong swings are likely to make your ball curve in one direction or the other.

The adventure mode is the main single player experience and that is basically a drawn out tutorial for a while where you can only play as a Mii character. Eventually it becomes a deeper experience with some stat building, but honestly it feels like it harks back to a Wii era title, like more of an expansion to the Wii Sports era golfing experience than what I would expect from a Mario Golf title.

So it's got some charm giving it some bonus points, but honestly this is probably one of the worst golf games I have played in recent years. Just a very disappointing experience.

I'm so dissapointed, really wanted this game to be good. The core swing mechanics are fine, but everything else is turdballs. It looks dreadful, the campaign is boring and speed golf isn't a fun activity. Taking your time to plan the perfect shot is what's fun about golf. And worst of all it lkacks any of that Mario/Nintendo magic.

It is no longer launch day. I have been through the story mode three separate times in order to customize a mii for each playable mode of the game (a long driver for stroke play, a max speed hard hitter for speed golf, and a well-rounded mii for all purpose play). And three separate times I have been sorely disappointed by the prospect of what could have been, in the face of what actually is.

There is simply not enough to do. There are three game modes, and there is the story mode, and there is the barely functional online play. That's it. Two of the game modes use the same courses, so by the end of day one, you'll have completed the story, and played through each course at least 3 times. And then there's battle golf, but even that loses it's lustre when you realize that the easiest way to win is to shoot last and simply aim for holes that no one is fighting over.

There are plenty of characters to choose from, so that's a plus, until you realize that the only difference between characters is yardage, and the rest of the character stats. Draws and fades are mechanics of the past, shot loft is no more. Each character hits the ball straight, with only slight variances occurring due to your spin or control stats.

The swing meter has been simplified from 3 button presses to 2, and while I don't exactly hate the new system, it does become quite irritating when you feel like you've lined up a perfect shot, only for the randomness of the shot accuracy to kick in.

Course designs are pretty bland. I understand no one is buying a mario golf game because of how nice the courses look, but they're lacking any sort of character. And the final course which I won't spoil for you here seems like it's unfinished with blurry textures and unclear OB spots and all sorts of little quirks compared to the other, more fleshed out courses.

Online is fine, considering Nintendo's stupid policy of leaving ethernet ports out of their consoles. Good luck managing to keep 4 players around for a full game though.

Basically, the TLDR of this review is... it feels like the franchise took a step back with this installment. Yes, it is fun. Yes, I've played every day since it came out and I have a good time with it. But that's because I'm a sucker for punishment and I really enjoy golf games. But there are so many minor things wrong with this game that I can't in good conscience give it a 7 anymore.

    For instance:
    -No tournaments
    -Few game modes
    -No saved replays
    -Terrible camera angles
    -No leaderboards
    -No shot trajectory line
    -Incomplete story mode

I like the game, and I like the fact that DLC is coming, but I hate the modern practice of rushing out an incomplete game (which this is) and finishing it later over time through DLC. Thankfully it's not paid.

If you like golf, get it. It's only going to get better with DLC and updates. Otherwise, pass on it.

For example-- get stuck up against a wall or bunker? Too bad, there is no lob shot like irl golf. Can't pop a ball up over a hill, too bad. Are you aiming at a tree, wall or obstacle? You won't know it, because the aiming indicator is non existent.

Wind mixed with elevations makes zero sense when aiming for the flag.

Playing online, need to quit? Too bad, now you can't play online again until your penalty for quiting is served.

It's these omissions, mixed with the more realistic approach to golf that makes it frustrating. If you're going for real life golf sim mechanics and physics, then for f sake-- put in all the golf manoeuvres like lob shots! Jeez...

This game is so close to a birdie... But scores a bogey for now. Let's hope FREE DLC will fix it.

Running around the maps, running around the links, just lots of running. The load times are a bit much for how little is here and you get really sick of watching CPU players play through a hole and either get hole in ones and birdies or 6-8 strokes on a hole that takes them forever to complete. You can't skip CPU players, you have to watch them.

I really miss Mario Golf Toadstool Tour. I played that a lot and it was one of Nintendo's best sports titles but instead of modernizing that, they continued their Mario Sports trash series where the gimmicks are 90% of the game and everything that makes the sport what it is, is just not good.

I can't enjoy this, definitely can't play this for longer than 20 minutes without being bored or annoyed so I can't say how much is here but it feels empty. Is 2 harsh? Maybe, but I really did love Nintendo's sports titles back in the Gamecube generation. Even GBA had some decent titles but come on Nintendo, if you're going to make a sports game start with a good sports game. You can still do gimmicks but give me something I want to come back to.

The story mode is a drag with RPG elements half-baked in. Graphics are meh. Speed and battle golf aren't nearly as fun as they were thought of to be.

There was hardly anything to unlock like Characters via Matchplay or gaining points by doing Tournaments to unlock new course. We don't have Ring shot or Minigolf as well. Sure I'm glad we also didn't get Slot Golf but I would hardly call this a game whatsoever. This is just another example of how Nintendo fails to make a good game for not taking it serious enough because it isn't a mobile money machine.
Further WHY THE HECK MAKE BALL CONTROL RANDOM NOW? in older installments you had to have some kind of skill to make sure the Ball fly's straight and where you want it to land but noooooo this time it has to be random, prolly to better appease casual players but even back then, all you had to do is time you button press well to get the optimal control what's so hard about that that casual players need to be pampered with randomness to not be overwhelmed. This game could have been good but with such a development failure of course it will sell even worse once word got out and puts in the final nail in the coffin for this "unrentable" franchise. If your a company that long on the market you should feel an obligation to maintain your franchises good standing for at least every "Generation" your on the market, even if it isn't the big selling product but for keeping a positive image and to have continues relevance. There is always a smaller but passionate market that you shouldn't sour your relation towards.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is an empty husk of a game and the epitome of Nintendo's long and relentless journey towards making all of their games as soulless as possible.

The adventure mode is horrendously bland and pointless, it's linear to the point where you question why they even put all the time and effort into making it if all you do is travel from A to B to C and play the same courses over and over. The only things to do besides playing courses to reach the extremely anticlimactic ending is: talk to nameless Mario brand characters who say words, all of which are instantly forgotten, play practice missions which actually teach you some techniques but at the cost of doing them over and over until you memorize how to hit the shots as wanted, or buy gear at the stores which are completely useless unless they are the gear for the specific course you are about to play next in the plot. Speaking of plot, the story is eye-wateringly contrived and miserable. You drift apart from the only friends you have in the world to follow the whims of some nameless god in order to beat some sort of evil snow thing, but it really doesn't matter, by the end you will have forgotten why you did any of this and you are rewarded with nothing beyond some text on the screen trying to convince you that you did something meaningful, but you have not.

The golf is almost fine but still manages to be bad. The accuracy for each shot is not only randomly determined but also predetermined, so you get the worst of all worlds. You can't know how your shot's accuracy will line up when you hit it, but if you restart the match, now you do. Scoring a birdie/eagle/albatross/hole in one is rewarded with your character doing a spin and smiling or something, there are only two animations and neither are that congratulatory. This actually lines up pretty well with the fact that if you are running on the course, you will not be able to see any impressive shots you make, and there are no replays. If a ball falls into a hole and no one is there to see it, does it even matter? The accuracy shift, the redline of the shots, also doesn't matter. The wind hardly matters. Club choice depending on terrain doesn't matter. Just hit the ball to the next spot so that you can hit the ball to the next spot.

This is a bad video game and no one should play it. Actually, it's worse than that. It's a competently made video game that has no point in existing, other than to cause distress and regret. I write this review to try to cope with the fact that I spent sixty dollars to play an awful golf game by the developers who made Advanced Tour.

I love how much personality the characters have with their animations and the silly things you can make them say. I love the level of control and accuracy you have that’s easy to understand and figure out. You’re able to control where on the ball you hit and able to put a topspin or backspin or even stronger variants. Super shots felt important and needed to be managed carefully. The aim of your shots are easy to figure out because you can follow the path of the shot and change it depending on the whole arc, giving fantastic control to the player.

Super Rush falls short of every single one of these. Character animations are practically dead and there’s no way to make snarky comments when others are shooting. The time I spent with the game I tried to parse how to simply put a backspin on my shot, and the game just doesn’t tell you anything. The game pretends to give you control over putting a spin on the ball, but then rng kicks in and it’ll change what your spin is regardless of your input. Different clubs don’t seem to change shot arcs but instead just change distance, something you can already do with any club. Aiming is an absolute mess, your only tools are a birds eye view that doesn’t show depth at all and a “first person” aiming mode that barely controls at all.

I would comment on the extra modes, but with how the game controls on the basest levels it just isn’t worth even getting into them. There’s a few neat multiplayer ideas but the single player possibilities are so sparse compared to the tournaments and challenges of older games. It’s to such an extent I don’t think the game could get course corrected even with patches, something that shouldn’t even be a requirement to ask for. As much as I want a good new Mario Golf game, this isn’t it. I’d recommend finding a copy of Toadstool Tour instead.

People defending this gameplay mechanic, heck, I even defended it at one point. It's not worth defending. It basically removes the whole point of golf, it removes learning the clubs, knowing how to handle each situation. It's all gone. You just smack it and hope for the best. The game simply wont allow you to mess up. It's the worst thing to possibly happen to Mario Golf cos it ruins every single aspect of the game. The skill element, the planning element, the timing, the importance of each club, it's all gone. if you think I'm exaggerating, you haven't played the game enough, or haven't dared to experiment. The only thing that comes out unscathed really is the putting.

At the most it's a system you can tolerate but I highly doubt people familiar with the series can honestly say this is the right direction for the series. And it's not just me. My dad bought a Switch JUST for this game cos he loves the series so much. And after a day, he was saying he's thinking of selling it. He's 60 and even he hates it, it's sad.

I can't believe how much they messed up Mario Golf here. It's a shallow, hollow shell of a game and I reckon it'll forgotten about by most in a month or two. And top it all off, it barely has any content or side modes. No ring shot, club slots, challenges, vs matches, win records, leaderboards. Nothing. it's almost comparable to Mario Tennis Ultra Smash and that's just sad.

    The worst Mario Golf game.

Even the NES Mario Golf game from 30 years ago had a tournament mode. The graphics are amazing, Adventure mode is generally good albeit short considering it’s the main non-multiplayer draw to the game. I finished it in about 8 hours. That’s not great for a $60 game. There’s a lot of empty, go-nowhere dialogue with open world bystanders in Adventure mode, but the writing isn’t bad, and sometimes worth a chuckle. Nintendo’s spin on adding a speed element with fun battle mechanics is a breath of fresh air and pretty well executed. At the end of the day, until some more meat is hopefully put on the bones via supposedly free updates, it’s unlikely this is where I’ll be spending many gaming hours unless my kids ask me to play with them. The game, as-is, is certainly worth playing, but it’s not $60 worth of game. Maybe only half that. Maybe… Expand

As far as content...this game feels pretty bare compared to something like Mario Golf: World Tour on the 3DS, which had all sorts of compelling game modes/challenges to play solo or online. The "Adventure Mode" is extremely lacking in its pacing, cohesion, and execution. It starts off OK, but there are just too many missteps. Online play is fun, but feels like something thrown in at the last minute. Why is there no Mii progression in online play or solo challenges?? Why are there no online tournaments?? I could go on and on about ways this game could have been great. Maybe they have some things lined up for the future. But as it is, it's currently just OK. Like so many other classic Nintendo titles this one has been gutted and replaced with a pathetic product. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that the N64 Mario Golf is a better game in every single way. Below is a brief breakdown of the key points of the game I feel are relevant to anyone thinking about buying.

    Mechanics/Gameplay -

Very similar to what they have done with games like Mario Party and Mario Tennis. The gameplay is worse and less intuitive than the N64 title. No top down view or zoom in brackets. Not enough maps. Extremely short with very little hours of content to play. Basically it is only entertaining if you have a friend to play with. The rangefinder is barely functional and it moves around frantically because the Joycons drift is so bad. The shot gauge is improved in some ways, but modified to make it extremely easy. You can chip out of bunkers with a 1 wood. It's bad. Story mode is as confusing and ridiculous as it is short. The speed golf modes are ridiculous and in some ways insulting to the consumer and the sport of golf. It is almost as if Nintendo finds that golf is now "too boring" for people these days, and they need to throw in useless ADHD game modes that nobody will play instead of making a functional golf game that is both fun and challenging with a good single player mode. Oh and also you can't play 4 player local because....reasons?

    Graphics/Visuals -

Graphics look like they copy and pasted the character models from Mario party and put (some of) them in golf clothing. The character design is lazy and unfinished. The actual environments themselves are okay looking, but in some instances horrible. The water in the Ridgewatch Lake is laughable and the fact that it was allowed in the game shows just how low Nintendo's QC has sunk in recent years. There were a few nice touches here and there (the birds and sheep on the course) but even the details on the sideline are shamelessly bad. The "spectators" look like an intern copy pasted the same group of generic koopas and goombas randomly through out the course. The environments are genuinely less interesting than Mario Golf 64, and the graphics considering the time the 64 title was released are vastly inferior.

    Music/Sound -

Perhaps the weakest single point about the game. SFX noises are generic and background noises
are lacking and forgettable. The character noises are the worst they have ever been and features such as being able to say "Four" have been removed when they existed in the 64 version. Wait you're saying this game has less features than a game released 20 years ago?? The score is absolutely unbearable. Thankfully they allow you to turn it off during the match, but man they should just let you turn it off while in the menu as well. Generic and uninspired garbage. Nothing like the 64 OST which was incredible. Remember when Nintendo gave a crap about making music that was good for their games? Hahaha good times.

This game is proof positive that laziness, complacency and just downright stupidity is thriving at Nintendo. Anyone at Nintendo who was involved with this release who is reading this should feel ashamed. I feel burned after this, at a time when I was starting to trust the brand again. I just wish that they still put charm, character and love into their games like they used to. I'm not even mad, I'm just sad. Mario Golf 64 was a work of art. This is a soulless husk. If I did my job the way Nintendo executed this release I would be fired.

am really hating the UI in this game compared to Toadstool Tour. It feels like I have no information on how my shot is going to aim. Gone is the ability to see your shot's entire flight path, the ability to angle your shot BEFORE you swing so you can tell if it's going to clear a tree, or even the simple ability to just move the camera to different angles and distances. You just have no real control over the camera to speak of so it all feels like a guessing game.

I don't understand the point of the scanner / range finder either, as it doesn't even let me set a marker on the power bar as to where to stop in order to hit where i want to aim... unlike to TT where you could set markers on the bar to indicate precisely where you wanted to aim. I can't think of a single use for the scanner except checking the topography of where I'm going to land.

I like that you can change the flight curve mid-air, but I don't see how that's useful when I can't see the flight path before swinging to know if my actions are going to be effective or not.

They took out manual and forced all shots to be automatic shots, so it's like I there is little reward for skilled play. Also, the whole gimmick with the top of the power bar causing your shots to go wild just feels like punishing me, especially as without interesting courses, the only real "strategy" is to just drive as far as you can until you're putting on the green.

Almost all the maps are extremely boring and offer no interesting diverging paths. It's just standard, uninspired golf the entire time.

The new additions are neat, like the special clubs and shots, but the horribly stripped UI that makes it extremely hard, if not impossible, to plan precise shots along with the CONTINUED refusal to add mini golf back in and the lack of actual content has made this a real bummer for me. This game feels much more like a golf simulation than an arcade game - and I don't play mario sports games for a simulated difficulty - I play them for wacky over the top environments and plays that would be nearly impossible irl.

I can't recommend playing this until after they add more content, and even then it's not a sure thing. Just don't be like me and buy it physically so you can at least sell it or return it.

Way too easy and random. Comparing it to Everybody's Golf (Hot Shots Golf) on the PlayStation, Mario Golf is just way too easy and random. What in Golf is random? Nothing. It is and should be about precision and a clever combination of parameters. Mario Golf is just Golf for 6 year olds.

Swinging: Ok, I could have guessed that a 2-click-mechanic might miss the final 3rd click that makes swinging in golf games so fun and challenging. Hitting perfectly straight in Mario Golf? No problem, because there is no 3rd click. Instead every swing that is close to the 100% of the club length gets a RANDOM divergence to the left or right. Why random? Facepalming really hard. Please introduce 3-click-swings!

Curve balls: You can give the ball as much as 4 (!!!) curves. Why? Does it make it more fun or are 4 curves needed for certain courses? No. It just adds nonsense complexity that doesn't help the experience at all.

Putting: Way too easy. All other games are harder and as hard as they should be. Greens in Mario Golf are just super easy and boring.

Courses: Yes, colorful as Mario Kart courses, but they aren't done smart. No hard decisions to be made, no clever new routes open up with certain characters or clubs, no risk-reward patterns at all.

Story mode: Just pain. Feels like a 10 year old boring adventure game with loads of dumb conversations and lame challenges. You need to play it though to be able to access all courses.

Speed Golf: Fine, but running is just very repetitive and not nearly as fun or challenging as a real golf game should be.

Maybe I shouldn't have hoped for a nice Nintendo version of Everybody's Golf. My fault, I guess.

Cross-country golf is a good idea but is dreadful. The story mode doesn't compare to the GBA games or even the 3DS game.
Furthermore, there is a lack of content. The courses are basic and there are only 6 of them at launch. Only 6 courses isn't a deal breaker but the fact they are so basic and devoid of character kills them. The battle golf gimmick is another good idea done dreadfully, but there are only 2 variations of the course and the item mechanic isn't as developed as the same idea in the 3DS game.
Finally, the big gimmick; the speed golf. It's fun. The first few times. By the end of the story mode, the mechanic had already worn thin and didn't excite me barring the odd multiplayer game.
Compared to every other game in this series, this game falls short. No challenge mode (with the challenges in the story just amounting to handholdy tutorials) and nothing to keep my attention for longer than 5 hours.
This may end up being like Kirby Star Allies and after the launch it will grow to be something fun. But now, it is nothing more than a distraction and I implore anybody who does enjoy this game to go back and play the other earlier games to see what a truly fun Mario Golf game is.
The game is pretty enough but just feels B-tier across the board. I also don't get why there couldn't be more characters in the game because most of them are simply skins. Sure, animation work takes time, but with the special shots/ dashes being doubled up on occasion it just smells slightly cheap for a full price game.
Disappointing. Disappointing. Disappointing. High hopes, dashed.

Of the 6 (really?) courses that were released, I will say that only 3 of them stand out. And the super annoying repeated audio from the characters is almost enough to make me want to mute the game, even though I actually quite enjoy the soundtrack.

Obviously, this game shines with friends and family. It's a blast playing Speed Golf and trying to get the quickest and lowest score. And not every game is fun with friends (I'm looking at you, Super Mario Party), so it definitely succeeded in that aspect.

I just wished they would have delayed the game by at least 2 months to really give it the Nintendo polish that I have come to expect from them. I know that DLC is coming in the future, but I much would have preferred a later release with much more content instead of what we got.

TL;DR: If you have friends to play this game with, by all means, go for it. It's a blast with friends. Sadly... Mario Golf: Super Rush is NOT Toadstool Tour. The combination of my high expectations and nostalgia for the GameCube classic really affected my ability to enjoy this game. I realize that isn't fair to the developers of MGSR, as this is a NEW game with NEW gameplay modes, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Mario Golf Super Rush seems to suffer from an identity crisis. It feels too complicated for casual gamers, but too rigid for serious competitors (IMO). There's an 'RPG' mode, but the NPCs have nothing to say, the locations are sparse, and the story is snooze. You've got every Mario character ever to choose from and the 'Head Coach' is just named 'Head Coach'? Why not let Yoshi guide you through the adventure? Why is 'Birdo' your 'mama'? Why do you even need to 'rest'? It feels lazy and incomplete.

Speed Golf is admittedly fun, and the network play enhances it greatly because the local AI is atrocious.

One of my major gripes is that they got rid of replays... REPLAYS! I understand that they wouldn't work in speed or battle golf... but why take them out of single or multiplayer local play? Also, you can't see the trajectory of the ball / the trajectory never changes as you change clubs. This makes it really difficult to know the flight path of your shot when you're aiming at the tornados in XC mode, or simply trying to curve around trees. Why?!

I'm sure I'll learn to love it more (or at least LIKE it), and am excited to play online with my friends now that we're grown and have families of our own. Super Rush could have been great, but it's not.

It's nearly impossible to tell which direction the ground slopes. The putting indicators are all bunched together on the grid so every putt is basically a guessing game. But hey, the point isn't golf; it's about running around the bleak and uninteresting golf course! Actual golf is pretty clearly an afterthought here.

I can't adequately express my disappointment after waiting nearly two decades for the sequel to Toadstool Tour. Do yourself a favor and either go back and play that game or pick up Everybody's Golf for the PS4. They're both clearly superior in every measurable way. It's not often that Nintendo fails this badly on a Mario IP, but maybe they'll be able to pull it together for the next iteration by 2035.

This game can sometimes be frustrating but the game of golf is meant to be that way so I don't care. The problem with this game though is a lack of focus. The new scanning mechanic is kinda annoying and doesn't really work Super well, for me at least, also the online mode lags quite often. The gimmick of Super rush is the running to the ball mechanic. This mechanic just isn't that fun though it doesn't feel as wild and fun as you would hope. Overall this is a fun game, but doesn't try to be anything more than that, I hope the upcoming updates are really fun, but this game just isn't as good as it could be. Expand

Nope, screw you for playing this game we're going to make unscalable cliff walls around the barrier and another cloud pushing you back in the only other path to the ball. Oh you were 8 shots under par and right next to the hole? Wow, sucks to be you. Thanks for the $60 schmuck! Wait here while we slowly fail you on your best game. Stalemates are lazy game development. We know there's free DLC coming to keep interest up with additional courses and I suspect extra characters as there's plenty of space on the selection page. The reason for minus 2 points is the artwork. Mostly the UI is a bland affair with no character or Mario style flair. Podium section at the end of a round is equally bland in presentation. The worst thing though is the environment art especially in the last two courses, Wild Weather Woods and Bowser's Highlands, it looks quite poor and feels very rushed indeed. If you want to play with friends or solo play online it’s a fun game that can waste some hours, if you want classic style of golf with tournaments and cups, that’s not present at all unfortunately. I’m assuming both will be added later on, but this is the basis of a golf game that should have been added along with the two gimmicks of Speed and Battle golf. They’re fun, but requires online to play since the bots are pretty stupid and there is no way to change the difficulty of them. There is also no way to see where your ball is going via scope, you get another stupid gimmick to see land slope etc, but can’t really zoom in and out, which is the same case for putting, can’t really tell what slopes are for long putts so it’s a guessing game. Also no really challenges besides those thrown into adventure mode; which aren’t all that challenging. Perhaps after adventure campaign you could go back and play the tournaments on the lackluster 6 maps they put into the game... Overall it’s a decent/mediocre game. Worth $65? Absolutely not, it’s a $30-40 at most. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mario Golf Super Rush lives up to the last part of its name Super Rush as it feels super rushed and it feels like Nintendo purposely cut characters who have full in game models and audio (Birdo and Toadette) just so they could release them later on as "DLC". The story mode or should I say tutorial was bland and boring I expecting to take part in some tournaments but nope that doesn't happen instead they tease you at the beginning by showing Mario winning a big tournament but do you face him in a tournament? nope you go through a story mode consisting of learning different shots like putting for example and you help Bowser who's being treated as a hero in this game (No seriously) defeat the Snow King in the easiest battle ever hell getting to the battle was more challenging than actually facing him.

The controls for the most part are simple enough and for those who like motion controls they have those too but the smooth controls don't make up for a lack of content there's like 5 courses and none of them feel unique, the roster was shallow as hell with only 8 characters total not counting your Mii which you can unlock for regular play by beating the story mode.

all in all I don't recommend this title to anyone at this time I mean it was fun for awhile but it got dull real fast save your cash and either wait for a sale or until Nintendo drops any DLC

Nothing in the game looks complete. The feeling of playing is the same as experiencing a bug-free tech demo. Compared to the other games in the franchise, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this one is at the low-tier mobile game level.

One interesting thing to note is that the game is so low budget and lazy that the development team didn't even bother to pay particular attention to each game mode. Standard golf is basically Rush Mode without the option to run. For example, in rush mode there are no replays of your shots, because it's a real-time match, because of that standard mode doesn't have replays either, because what wasn't essential for Rush Mode was considered superfluous. Another example is the fact that the flag is not removed from the hole when you are on the green, this does not happen in Rush Mode, which is understandable, but the fact that it is not removed also in standard mode when you play solo or in turns is simply bizarre. Apparently the Camelot guys didn't consider the game worthy of receiving a single extra line of code, this is the respect they have for the game.

This is one of those games that is so incomplete for the price that it sounds like an insult. It's as if the seller has no respect for the customer. I'm surprised Nintendo considered a game that wouldn't even qualify for a mid-tier mobile game to be released for $60 for the main console. This game is so incomplete, so barebones, that it alone made me lose all confidence in Nintendo-licensed games. I hope more players will follow my "example" and not buy anything else from Nintendo until they start releasing full games again.

If you survive this, you'll be treated to a disaster second section, "XC Golf", best described as "Everything you hated about trying to run up vertical mountains in Skyrim glued to everything you hated about trying to gauge depth on a handheld screen". I think it's a lot less casual-friendly than past entries. You can't see the trajectory of the ball like in the past, the "shot shaping" system is pretty complex and hard to master if you want to get the best scores possible, and when dealing with weather effects on top of that it might be frustrating for some.

The best thing about the game so far for me that Mario Tennis Aces was sorely lacking at release is the amount of customization you have when setting up games. When playing standard golf, you can choose if everyone takes turns or goes all at once, disable special shots, adjust the weather strength, choose how many holes to play (up to 18) and more. And probably most importantly in my opinion, you can disable BGMs during matches for a relaxing golf experience without that obnoxious music blaring.

In its current state, I wouldn't recommend it to most people for $60 unless you really like golf. Get it used or wait for a sale if you're still on the fence about it.

Feels unfinished. Story mode didn't even include tournaments really. Would have much rather had a pga-esque type thing than fighting monsters with golf. Not that many courses, could use more characters as well.

Fun and Addicting, with more free courses on the way, you'd have to be a miserable person not to love this game and the potential of its future.

On one hand it’s a great party game, on the other it’s golf On one hand the story mode is surprisingly good, on the other hand it’s golf
On one hand it’s not another Tennis game, on the other it’s golf. On one hand speed golf and the battle mode are really interesting ways to spice things up, on the other hand it’s still fricking golf! This game does everything it possibly can to make golf

This game does everything it possibly can to make golf fun and you can have fun with this game. But the biggest thing holding this game back it that it’s GOLF! There’s only so much they can do to make golf fun but at the end of the day it’s still golf. It is one of the worst sports and by fair the most boring sport to watch even with Waluigi having a fine suit. Make a sports game about a sport people actually care about.

Some of the movement mechanics are nonsense, the curve in air function can be hard with joycon drift, story mode is really short. Wait until a sale, golfing is fun.

    Well, Nintendo duffed it.

As a fan of golf games, and Mario Golf games in particular, this felt like stepping onto an unfinished 9-hole course. As a fan of golf games, and Mario Golf games in particular, this felt like stepping onto an unfinished 9-hole course. The mechanics are strong, and the small number of courses look great, but the content is thin, and there is little to keep you coming back. After completing the brief and desultory tutorial story mode, I expected to be introduced to tournaments, tours and additional story, but instead found the game suddenly finished - minus any post game/endgame. You can go back to replay the tutorials and story elements, though there is little incentive other than it’s the only way to level up your Mii. And after being introduced to XC golf, duff shots, lob shots, and after unlocking clubs and gear, you find these sadly don’t exist outside of story mode. Speed golf is a nice addition, and makes for fun multiplayer, but aside from playing the occasional round with friends, there is little reason to return to Mario Golf: Super Rush.

Here’s hoping the upcoming free updates correct some of these failings. Birdies:
    - Speed golf mode (though waiting for your sad computer opponents to complete holes can seriously hinder the “speed”)
    - Graphics and mechanics

    Bogeys:
    - No tournaments or tours (in story mode or online)
    - Too few modes, courses and unlockables
    - Short, desultory story mode that provides little incentive to return after completing
    - Unlocked clubs, gear, duff shots, lob shots, and XC golf not available outside story mode

Tons of fun but ran out of content and things to do fast!!! I loved the courses. But.... I could easily point out where they were going to add more to the story mode and didn't. It really dose just seem like they had to cut a ton of story stuff just because they were rushed to get this out under the strain of covid. The rest of the modes were fun... but if you compare this to say the GCTons of fun but ran out of content and things to do fast!!! I loved the courses. But.... This game is easily the best Mario sports game we've got in a while. While I'd like to see online ranked play or tournament modes, the game is a absolute blast and I can't stop golfing.

I normally don't go out of my way to review stuff, but I wanted to write this to defend this game because because of all the hate it's been getting. Mario Golf Super Rush is pretty great game, I'd say - the base mechanics are easy to pick up but tough to master, just how it should be. Other modes are cool for shaking things up as well; oh, and everything is better with friends, per usual.I normally don't go out of my way to review stuff, but I wanted to write this to defend this game because because of all the hate it's been getting. I haven't finished story mode but can say that it isn't the most exciting thing, though it's a cool way to learn the game with a bit of a world-building/story type shell around it. Only actual complaint is that the graphics aren't great sometimes - there's some pop-in for trees and certain characters just don't have a shadow sometimes. Overall, very fun. I'm not totally sure if you'll get your money's worth at full price if you only play alone, but if it's ever on sale for $40 then it's definitely worth it. Expand

    1) Every shot is automatically accurate. No. There's about a million different ways you can modify a shot and course conditions that effect your swings that becomes more important as you play with actual players. People are contradicting themselves saying every shot is accurate while others are complaining shots don't respond like they should. Maybe it's course conditions? Note you CAN see the trajectory/loft on your shot too. Incorrect information from some about that.

Types of shots, not "automatically accurate":

    a) Backspin and Super Backspin
    b) Shaped Shots
    c) Super Shots
    d) Top Spin
    e) Duff Shots
    f) Blast Shots
    g) Clubs with specific effects such as: Increased Draw, Increased Fade. Abilities to clubs such as: Stingers. Skipping Water. Hitting through wind more easily, etc
    h) Lob Shots

    2) The game has poor graphics. It's a switch, rendering how many assets including trees, particle effects, characters. It's not bad at all. Switch has limited hardware. Get over it.

    3) The game isn't competitive. Ranked doesn't mean competitive. Ranked means Ranked. You can play online with strangers and friends. There's also a Battleground to play on.

    4) Courses are too easy. Not in adventure mode. There's plenty of challenges. Courses also have unique conditions to affect your shots. For example, there's lightning on a course. If you don't have the club to resist lightning and want to hit a shot in the "lightning zone" you get electrocuted and it changes your ability to shoot the ball. I've also played against two bosses in an arena format within Adventure mode.

    5) There aren't enough courses. More to come in DLC.

    6) The music isn't as good as Nintendo 64. Seriously take off the rose tinted lenses. "Best Music" is subjective.

    7) "Wish there was a standard mode". There is a standard mode.

My take away is this. I'm absolutely fed up with people who don't play a game, own the game, or review a game from start to finish weighing in with heavy handed opinions and essentially dog piling what they are saying that simply isn't true. It's a quality game, it's fun. I enjoy playing with my friends. 7.5/10.

Why? Why are you doing this? One of my favorite series (Super Mario) you ruined with this... Honestly the delevopers hadn't thought of anything better than that? When I first played it... It was a mess. Within five minutes, you'll be bored of it. I suggest you don't play this game... I'm not suggesting it.

    - Thinking that Adventure mode is like the story or something like that? No, don't try to think of this like that. This is a Mario Game. No think about finding something that is revolutionary or gives the a good story. The Adventure mode is somewhat of a tutorial so you can grind your character.
    - This is not totally a bad thing. But you can notice that there will be DLC. Hopefully will add a ton more content
    - Why they didn't include a tournament mode??
