Oddworld: Soulstorm is an amazingly done reboot of Abe's Exoddus. Despite its new cover, the game brings remarkable aspects from its original version back from the 90s, but with a novelty flavor.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is probably the best Oddworld game, and the Switch port doesn't disappoint.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a dark and depressing game. I don't know if I found it particularly distressing because Abe's childlike deamanour and big, sad, wet eyes, or his boatload of hardships, or because I killed too many Mudokons. Or maybe it's just 'cos it bummed me out as a kid. All I know is that despite everything I kept playing and it was still a heck of a lot of fun and that's a sign of a good game in my book.

Featuring a great world to explore, very tricky and demanding challenges and a fully immersive plot, this edition of Soulstorm will have players fully mired in its intricacies. Not all its aspects are flawless though, and some elements of level design along with long load times will cause some bouts of frustration, but this is an overall marvelous Oddworld experience and in a handheld-friendly format, too.

I enjoyed Oddworld: Soulstorm more often than I didn’t. The moments of frustration were intense, but most of the time I was just having a good time rolling through this adventure. The performance issues are both expected and unfortunate, but I suppose it could have been a whole lot worse. This is still just about as playable as the other versions of the game. That said, if you have the option of a more powerful platform, I would take it. A decent enough game to not let down the series, but not one I would recommend to anyone but those who are all-in on the Odd.

Overall, there were too many irritations in Soulstorm to win any of my enthusiasm. Every play session left me somewhat frustrated, and I often had to talk myself into booting it up. If you’re dying to revisit Abe’s Exoddus, this is certainly the best way to accomplish that. I just wish it was a little more fun and a little less janky.

Disappointment. That is the singular word this game leaves me with. Somewhere, buried under a pile of glitches and bugs, is a competent, beautiful game, but I am just not patient enough to wade through all of it to find that game. Normally I'd consider a glitch or two as just an annoyance that I can look past, but I legitimately didn't want to finish this game because of some of the glitches. Supposedly there's a patch coming that may or may not address this, and if it shows up, maybe this is worth checking out. As stated, this game without the glitches would easily gain another two points on its score. If you're patient and don't mind constantly resetting the game, there's something enjoyable deep, DEEP inside, but I am not the person to dig it out.

II distinctly remember way back in 1997 when I first got that Abe's Oddysee box in my little hands and popped that CD-ROM into my PC. I remember the excitement at this fresh, new game. I'd seen nothing like it. Everything about it was fun and unique. And I remember how challenging it was. I think Abe's Oddysee was the game that taught me to enjoy the frustration what was part of it.
Of all the games I played in my youth, that was the one with the fondest memories.

I've been skeptical of playing Soulstorm. I can't say I enjoyed most of the subsequent Oddworld games that came after Abe's Oddysee. With the exception of Stranger's Wrath. And it's always kind of scary to play something based on a cherished childhood memory. If it's good, then it's a nice dose of nostalgia. If they get it wrong, you run the risk of tarnishing the memory.

Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about. It's all the best of Abe's Oddysee but newer and better. It looks amazing, and the story is excellent. I found myself enjoying the story as much as the game itself.
And Abe has learnt some new moves. It feels like Abe, but with richer environments and some cool new moves.

This was a great little trip down memory lane for me. It brought back all the best of Abe's Oddysee but in a new fun way. As for the bugs and glitches I've seen reported. I have yet to find any.

The story and the fun gameplay are convincing again and remind us of the good old days. The new skills and the great graphics also make for a lot of fun while playing. Unfortunately, the new crafting system feels rather gimmicky and doesn't really fit in with the really great rest of the game. Above all, you might want to buy the Oddtimized Edition, as you simply get more content. If you'd like to experience another interesting adventure with Abe, you should definitely check out "Oddworld: Soulstorm". Expand
