The tactical RPG Redemption Reapers doesn’t have any serious issues, but it does suffer from the little death of a thousand paper cuts. With a few minor adjustments, this could be a really good game. As it stands, it’s just an OK game with a very good soundtrack.

Redemption Reapers is an engaging, if somewhat niche, tactical RPG experience. Its strong moment-to-moment battling emphasizes a sense of hard knocks and desperate victories, but a thin story and slogging early stages risk alienating potential fans before they get a taste for its atmosphere.

Its stimulating forward-facing combat system, unusually sinister scenario and phenomenal soundtrack fight against stingy game economy and a constantly threatening spiral of frustration.

I’ve played worse turn-based tactical RPGs than Redemption Reapers, and perhaps some of my disappointment was on me for expecting more. But I can’t help but feel like there could have been something special here if the story was properly fleshed out and its various design choices worked better together. Instead we have a game that pushes against you in a lot of unpleasant ways, almost to the point where it feels like it wants you to stop playing. With how many solid entries in this genre the Switch has in its library, it’s hard to recommend this one with any real vigor.

There are some real fault lines running through Redemption Reapers that are hard to look past. The story and characters just aren’t given enough history to make anything feel particularly meaningful; there’s no real driving force. Early difficulty spikes are extreme and frustrating, and poor stat growth, coupled with extremely low hit points for many characters, makes it feel like the odds just grow increasingly insurmountable – at least until you can go back and grind to obtain experience points, which you won’t be able to do for the first part of the game. While the dark atmosphere, gorgeous visuals, and haunting soundtrack are promising, and while the combat mechanics have some real potential, the balancing issues, difficulty spikes, poor AI, and flat storytelling simply bog Redemption Reapers down too much.

Despite having some fun wrinkles on the tactical RPG formula, Redemption Reapers is too frustrating in its early levels to justify the thin plot and undeveloped characters. The music is the only consistently stellar part of the game, which is let down by uneven visuals and poor gameplay balance. You’re better off looking elsewhere for your tactical RPG fix on Switch.

As aI was on the fence to buy this game because of the bad reviews, waited for a sale and finally played the game with low expectations. As a tactics game fan (70 srpg titles on Nintendo Switch alone), I can say that this was one of the games that got me hooked to play longer, I felt no boredom as I playthrough, it feels like a kind of tactics game that I've been waiting for.

I don't think this game has major downsides, it has good graphics not so ground breaking but still serviceable graphics, performance on the Switch is just fine, the soundtrack is also good, sound effects are fine and mostly voice acted. The story is not that weak, It's like Attack on Titan but with orc looking baddies, the game gives you the feeling of dread because of the depicted devastation, but at the same time you will also feel your squads' confidence to take on these threats, and then to eventually learn that careful strategy and inventory management is what keep you surviving.

The gameplay is great, it is a very challenging game, it punishes you if you are not careful, when you think have high damage dealing heroes they are also the most squishy and can fall quickly without proper strategy to take advantage of your team composition, there are enough hero archetypes for defensive, support and offensive roles that you need to rely on to win the battle flawlessly by letting your heroes to work together. The game at times also forces you to change your strategy by altering winning conditions. This is definitely the part of the game that I enjoy the most.

In conclusion, I feel like the other reviews are quick to judge this game with mediocre ratings. This is not an AAA title but I think this game is a treat for tactical gamers.

Redemption reapers is a tactical grid based RPG with a dark and mature look. Your party of 5 will battle the 'Mort' during the 20 to 25 hour long main campaign, these opponents look similar to the enemies in the Lord of the rings movies. Graphically it looks good during gameplay and cutscenes considering this is not a triple-A title. All characters are fully voiced, and the voice actors do a great job. The soundtrack is some of the best around. I really enjoyed a lot of the music during missions and the ones played in between chapters. Gameplay wise, this is a team based strategy RPG where careful placement is necessary. The early chapters may be difficult if you do use the proper approach to battles. As the game progresses, skirmishes are unlocked where you can level up your party further if needed. Money and resources are scarce, especially at the start of the game, but become manageable at later stages. If you are looking for a mature and dark story combined with a great combat system and a killer soundtrack, look no further. Expand
