The only thing missing is something like an auto-battle feature which would’ve been nice, but I’m also getting old and lazy. If you’re into first-person dungeon crawlers or just stopping by to revisit an old classic then it’s an easy recommendation.

Phantasy Star is the best release so far from the Sega Ages series. It shows off innovation, outside the box thinking, and, after all these years, it is still a blast to play. It’s one for the ages, folks.

As someone who loves retro RPGs yet has never played Phantasy Star before, I'm amazed at how great of a game it is. When you factor in all of the awesome additions in this Sega Ages release, it's a definite must-buy for old-school RPG fans.

The Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star continues to prove that the Ages polish to old classics works wonderfully and should be emulated by other developers. The parts that made Phantasy Star feel archaic are gone, and while it still shows its age this version of the title is the strongest you’ll come across anywhere.

Now, with the quality-of-life improvements of this version (auto-mapped dungeons, less encounters-higher rewards, item and spell guide) and the amazing FM sound edition soundtrack, this is the best way to enjoy this classic masterpiece! Plus, the game remains very enjoyable to play and quite innovative and modern even to this day: female protagonist set out to avenge the death of her rebel brother, sci-fi meets medieval fantasy, 3 planets to explore, beautiful visuals and pixel-art anime cut-scenes... this game has so much to offer!
