It’s a hard task to create something that pays homage to a beloved work, as no matter what happens it will always be compared to that original piece, often unfavorably. Against these odds, UnMetal manages to straddle the line of being both a parody and an exceptional example of a top-down stealth game more than able to stand up to such scrutiny. While the game’s inspirations are obvious, it’s the fact that it also stands out on its own merits which makes it special and worth playing for anyone longing for a retro experience or clever, enjoyable writing.
UnMetal is one of those games that start without a real reason and end at all costs. It is not a masterpiece, mind you, but a very good game to have some good laughs in front of dialogues that are a mix of absurdity and pure idiocy. UnMetal is a tribute from start to finish to the Metal Gear series: more than the typical action hero, Jesse Fox looks like the slightly crazy clone of Snake. For those looking for something fun to play and for all retrogaming lovers, UnMetal is a mouth of fresh air in a videogame landscape that takes itself a little too seriously.
Fran's new is a wonderful tribute to the Metal Gear Solid saga but to the Spanish one. Extremely fun, worked in every aspect and a safe bet on any platform.
Minor issues aside, UnMetal is an absolute winner. With gut-busting writing and a great mix of retro-inspired stealth action enhanced with modern mechanics, it’s a game that warrants a spot in any classic Metal Gear fan’s collection. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last time we get to take control of Jesse Fox. He may not be the action hero we deserve, but he’s the one we need right now.
Not only is this hands down the funniest game I've ever played, its gameplay is super fun. Every scene feels fresh and new. The devs perfectly nailed what they were aiming for. Sure, you might die a few times, but that's part of the fun and challenge.
Doing a good parody is hard. You should have a really good understanding of the source material. You should imitate the original work you intend to mock, as closely as possible. And this is what Unmetal masterfully achieves. It’s a perfect parody of Metal Gear Solid games.
Unmetal plays as if the characters, dialogues are all taken directly from the Metal Gear Solid franchise (more so from the original Metal Gear titles), albeit in a more exaggerated and hilarious way. Without spoiling anything, it is a very complete story from start to finish and the laughs never stop until the very end.
Unmetal is a must-play for all Metal Gear Solid fans. I think it is a must-play for all the Kung Fury fans, as the sense of humour gives very similar vibes. It is also a remarkable video game and easily one of the most underrated games of 2021. Just make sure you have played at least one MGS game in advance, so you get all the jokes.
PROS: Story told in a very original way + Lot of objects to use + Funny to play + Cool references to MGS + Humor + Many different bosses + Upgrade system fits well + Long game + Great music
CONS: Final boss too difficult because you don't receive ammo + Low resolution graphics
