WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is the best wrestling game to come out in years and easily the best wrestling game available on console at the moment.

A clear improvement over "SvR 2008" but a lot of it's still very familiar. [Dec 2008, p.54]
  3. Yuke’s really stepped it up for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, with the pay off being the finest wrestling game for the HD systems to date. There are a few base gameplay anomalies that keep WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 from being a true champion, but the sheer quantity and quality of SmackDown vs. Raw 2009’s content, not to mention its WWE-perfect grandeur, makes the decision to grant the title belt to Yuke’s latest effort an easy one.

A game that is equal parts extreme sports action and surreal soap opera, an improvement that should keep it at the top of the wrestling game into the next decade.
  5. SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 sticks to what it should do best; provide a great wrestling experience for fans to play at home.
  6. WWE is back with all the heat of its fights. The third entry in this-gen consoles is full of energy, an incredible array of game modes, good visuals and great gameplay. A great choice for WWE lovers, but not suitable for everyone.
  7. The entire game feels lifeless and old. The presentation fails to capture the excitement of the real thing. The gameplay doesn't match the product it's attempting to emulate. And the layers upon layers of plain-looking menus feel like they were ripped out of a PlayStation 2 launch game.

I've grown to like the SvR series after so many of the earlier efforts in the lineup left me with a bad taste, this is possibly the best so far.

I have three gripes, probably amongst the most common I'm sure.
    1. Pre-selected wrestlers only for Road to Wrestlemania, you can't use your own and you can't select from anyone outside the pre-selected few options they give you.

    2. I understand letters and numbers not allowed for online play (people write offensive stuff on their characters), but none of the other stuff either? Why even have any of the designs at all then? When is this going to be fixed?

    3. I'm very appreciative for the Finisher mode, but it's all slams. Perhaps in the next offering the can allow a wider variety. Take your slams off the top rope, or create a new diving move...anything to beef up this mode from just grabbing a guy and slamming him to the ground.

Character models look a little better while the controls still sort of suck, It's still a fun, fast paced game but it's only worth playing if you can't afford WWE 12, achievment whoring or just for the nostaligia of wrestlers that have left the company (Jeff Hardy, Tommy Dreamer). Quite possibly the worst WWE game ever. Combat sucks, RTWM is garbage and the game is very barebones in game modes.
