A peculiar and unique title, with a skillful mix of platform, roguelike, rpg, survival and puzzle elements and a very effective artistic design.

The Deer God is an intriguing platformer that manages to tell a thought provoking story while being visually stunning along the way. Despite never managing to reach its full potential, there are enough interesting gameplay mechanics here to make it worth playing.

The Deer God mostly stumbles over its random nature and lack of explanation. It is the kind of game that is best enjoyed with a FAQ explaining all the systems and how to progress. Still, even with that the random nature really drags down some of the quests.

A decent platform adventure, but one that struggles with its identity.

Glorious art is a feast for the eyes, but if you've ever played a platformer, you won't be able to shake the feeling you've seen this all before. [Nov 2015, p.80]

There's no denying that there is potential here and there are some very touching moments, but the flaws are so game breaking that at times it's just not any fun to play.

    GAMEPLAY

Basic sidescrolling platformer, just not done very well. You're provided with a variety of items throughout the game that are often useless or don't even work right when used. When you die you will sometimes transform into another animal but only as a punishment. Then you have to die again before you can continue the story. This is a questionable gameplay element that just wastes time.

    SOUND
The music mostly helps to set the tone of the game but feels off at times, seeming to struggle for identity.

    GRAPHICS
The 3D pixelated world looks fairly pleasant but quickly loses its luster. It can be difficult at times to interpret interactive objects in the world, especially at the start before you familiarize yourself with it.

    ENTERTAINMENT
It starts okay but then does little to motivate you to keep playing. Poor gameplay ideas, mediocre platforming and a strewed story make this game one I'd rather pass up.

The graphics are so pix-elated that it's hard to determine if an object is an edible plant or a frog that somehow is able to hurt the main character. It has puzzles that make no sense and you don't even have to "solve" them. Just keep galloping to the right and move about your business. This game is free this month and it's not even worth that. Thinking about sending a bill to the published charging them for playing it. Don't bother with this one. Expand

It's ugly, it's got broken controls, it's got an incredibly trite story (what little there is is basically The Shaggy Dog/Brother Bear/Willy the Sparrow), and it's just chock full of nonsensical mechanics. Not only is this part of an oversaturated genre, nothing else about this game works. Free is too heavy a price. Expand
