It’s a good movie: tense, bold, angry, empathetic, provocative, observant, morally engaged. And also, to be honest, a trifle gimmicky.
No one in real life speaks the way they do in this film. No genuine drama is this crudely ordered drama, with its telegraphed turnabouts and conveniently-placed confessions, all building to a stage-managed plea for tolerance and unity.

The fact that all of these “professional reviewers” trashed this movie is EXACTLY why the movie was made- To show that YOU STILL DON’T GET IT! The story isn’t great because it’s one that’s been told over and over, it’s great because no matter how many times it’s told- it continues to happen! Listening to everyone’s opinion during the “trial” is exactly how people feel but only say it when in their comfort zone. There are many layers to this, it’s not all about black and white, good cop bad cop or privileged or under privileged. It boils down to the only thing that should ever matter- RIGHT VS WRONG.

Instead of lending immediacy, the padded-out documentary conceit only spotlights the stiltedness, and Parker falls short of building credible drama out of urgent issues.
A clunky, heavy-handed film that takes a pressing contemporary issue and flattens it under two genres the writer-director seems ill-equipped to handle — the mockumentary and the courtroom drama.
An asinine and self-serving call to action that tries to hide its basic incompetence behind a veil of righteous fury.
From beginning to end, American Skin is a jagged symphony of false notes, each one struck with a sledgehammer. The most charitable thing that can be said about it is that if Parker is attempting to simulate the work of a bad or inexperienced filmmaker, he succeeds beyond his wildest dreams.
Infuriatingly manipulative and insufferably preachy.
This is a MUST SEE for all white people and especially white people who are on an anti-racist journey. The movie portrays the humanity of the Black experience and the pervasiveness of white supremacy in every aspect of society. The filmmaker has laid it all out for us. We need to listen to Black voices who are speaking the truth. Watch this movie and urge others to do so as well. IGNORE THE R-RATING. This is something appropriate for white children. They need to see the truth. The rating is designed to keep the message from the youth.

Why did the slave traders disappear from Britain, apartheid from South Africa and racism from the United States did not? I hoped that during the long fake trial in the police station the (historical?) reasons for the divergence between the events of these nations would be touched: not at all. I keep my hypotheses I do not know how well founded and forward with the next film less anchored to the simple chronicle.
