It’s familiar, without being cliche or tied to any existing media. At the same time, it’s innovative, in a way that celebrates its familiar genre tropes, instead of snarking at them.
Crater might be too dark on a thematic level for some tweens, but the light it brings into the genre makes Alvarez’s film a soul-stirring escapade, one that introduces young audiences to ways to reform the fractured world they call home.
Decent kid's movie that at least tries to delve more into mature themes like grief, the effects of capitalism, and the value of memories. It gets corny at times, but not much to make you go away. As you would expect, there are some 'Stranger Things' vibes around the kid's group; looks like every teen movie it's aiming for that now. The good thing is that only one of the boys is annoying; the rest are ok. All in all, 'Crater' delivers a not-that-bad adolescent sci-fi tale that surely will inspire some kids to explore the genre as they grow up.
In a clever use of metaphor, the filmmakers have built an appealing world of wonders, hidden below the moon’s barren surface — suggesting there are fragments of hope embedded within even the grimmest landscapes.
It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-Z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.
Crater's stakes are low for its characters and the audience. It abuses clichés, never deviates from its formulaic script, and fails to surprise the viewer.
Kids may get a little something out of it thanks to its various “Young Adult Fiction” types and tropes. Maybe they’ll enjoy pondering if low gravity could be the thing that “saves” baseball. Anybody old enough to drive will be bored.
Crater is an average movie. The story feels long. I think the structure in general doesn't give any rhythm to the movie, and the action scenes feels very forced. The logic of the events is accommodating, to say the least. The dialogues were very uneven and overexposed a lot of things. Visually the movie is really good. The acting wasn't always good with the kids. The most interesting part comes around the end. But the author didn't exploited the 75 years of difference from the travel to another planet. Well, they did it with some audio extracts which for a movie, is kind of a sin. I give it 52%. There is still some visuals quality to the movie but the story didn't transmit much emotions, because structure and logic were all over the place.
A Disney Channel type adventure only with the budget of a Disney+ movie.
Impressively it's more emotional than I expected although I never really felt a connection with any of the leads.
Mckenna Grace, who is the most experienced actress in the cast, clearly carries the acting weight, but her co-stars don't let her do it all alone.
Crater is designed for younger viewers and I'm talking a bout kids and pre-teens, so it might work better with them.
In the end, it's not a sci-fi flop, but it can't help but feel like catalog filler either.
Carry low expectations.
huh, Why did I watch this? Why did I watch this?! Ok, this movie is boring, nonsensical and just plain generic.
The story is not bad, it's just let down by the different scenes, the chowdery dialogue, and a lot of stupid logic throughout the plot. Are you telling me that a bunch of kids are able to steal a million-dollar rover without any of the adults or Security noticing?
Yeah, No.
Let me guess the writers wanted to make a "deep" story that Children would enjoy. They probably asked themselves this question "What do Children enjoy? And then answered;
Oh I know, How about space and being on the moon where they have nonsensical fun for no reason, yes that's what children like watching"
No, you are wrong, It's movies like these that make me question why Disney puts money into garbage Disney Channel Quality Like films on a streaming service that adults pay for, because if this isn't for children (Which it's not) then who is it for?
The only thing that holds up is I guess the CGI, it's not bad, VFX artists did a reasonable job with what they were given.
Let me just reiterate, this film is boring, near the last Quarter of the film, I just lost interest, and I started looking at memes on my phone, and after I looked back the film was done. So yeah, instead of maybe getting a Sequel to, oh I don't know, the many different animations Disney has made over decades, we got this. Hell, I would even Enjoy a complete remake of the original animations in 3D CGI with the stencil watercolour rendering being used for the movie Wish. Disney, Take my Idea, just do it, all I want are good animated movies, is that so much to ask?
Right the rating, it's a 5/10, VFX and CGI do not help the film in any way, I judge the film based on how captivating and well-done the dialogue, scenes, characters(the Asian kid is annoying), story and plot are delivered. I will say though the pacing is good, it felt like a 2-hour movie, the only thing is that it was not interesting, so the film actually needed to be chopped down a little.
Don't put yourself through torture, do not consume, watch something else, please.
Oh and a Pro tip Disney, remember when I said make animations, yeah get these kids to voice act instead, and get your VFX artists to make a beautiful animation based on the ideas your directors and writers have, not everything has to be live action, realistic 4k Ultra HD definition.
Review Over and Out.
