The epic results simultaneously function as endoscopic body horror, as a portrait of overworked and underfunded medical staff and as a business study of death.
Part Frederick Wiseman-esque medical study, part endoscopic-horror tour de force, it is a thing to be experienced, ideally in a theater — a movie theater, not an operating one, though the filmmakers have a particular genius for blurring the difference.

The beautiful journey through human body, by cameras going directly into patients corpus during surgery. Sometimes you can not tolerate the terror and beauty of it at the same time.

I'm a doctor, and I vividly recall my first exposure to dissection of a human cadaver in medical school. Medicine has progressed remarkably since those days, but at what cost? This film asks how doctors, nurses, and other staff can keep their humanity in the face of the endless ugliness of our insides. The final scene presents a grotesque escape from thinking about the reality of being human.

As much as the new technology that prolongs our lives, and makes a film like De Humani Corporis Fabrica possible exists, there is a devastating truth about the vulnerability of the flesh that lingers.
Some cinema hits you in the gut – this film places you right inside the gut, and while it’s not always a pleasant place to be, it’s a visit you’re not likely to forget.
For viewers who resist the temptation to flee for the nearest exit, this fascinating and probing look at modern surgery is a memorable experience, making us ponder our own humanity as we watch humans reduced to pure flesh-and-blood organisms.
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s film is one of the supreme cinematic examinations of the body’s magnificent malleability.
The surgeries shown here, organs in their place in the crowded human body, functioning or failing, is indeed eye-opening. But the film’s structure is, as an ancient Roman critic would have put it, inportunum et inordinatum.
O filme todo é um retalho de cenas passadas no hospital, de forma crua e visceral, em diversas captações de cirurgias, procedimentos médicos, muito sangue e órgãos expostos, o que pode incomodar visualmente aos mais sensíveis. Particularmente as imagens em si não me incomodaram, inclusive consegui comer enquanto assistia.
Sei que é sem sentido criticar algo que foi a proposta do filme, mas de certa forma a aleatoriedade das imagens me incomodou. A certa altura, o documentério deu sono, tamanho o grau de repetição e frieza, pois ao optar por não revelar os sujeitos que estão sendo filmados, o filme se resume a tecer comentários breves, e utiliza uma linguagem muito técnica, talvez quem não seja da área da saúde sinta muita dificuldade em acompanhar (o meu caso). Achei acertada a opção por preservar as identidades das pessoas, mas poderiam ao menos ser mais didáticos, quem sabe por uma legenda explicando a qual procedimento estão sendo submetidos, algo que pudesse criar uma conexão maior.
Para completar, alguns closes eram próximos demais, a exemplo quando manipulam uma placenta, a câmera está tão próxima que é difícil entender. A ideia aqui é reforçar a imersão, como se seu olhar fosse um equipamento inserido no interior de um corpo humano muitas vezes, dando a impressão de enfoque. Isso funciona a maioria das vezes, mas nem sempre.
Acredito que alguns minutos a menos cairiam bem, mas mesmo com os problemas apontados, é um filme revelador, diferente e ousado. Imagino o trabalho para preservação de direitos de imagem, pois são cenas realmente muito fortes e impressionantes. Nosso corpo é uma máquina fantástica! O encerramento do filme, focando em quadros de arte que mostram cenas de sexo e celebração da vida, casam muito bem com a proposta de enaltecer a criação da espécie, realmente ficou apoteótico e muito bonita. Um filme que deve ser assistido, independente dos erros e acertos, pois é difícil seu conteúdo passar indiferente a quem vê.
