While the material at times veers close to exploitation, Knoll’s writing and Kunis’ performance ensure this is ultimately a tale of survival and perseverance — of a victim who refuses to let that label define her.
The film . . . is good, not great; it never quite marries the skewering of New York elites with the true-crime feel of its grittier elements. But the performances keep it mostly on track.

Kunis’s alpha female appears at once ferocious and like a conspicuous sham. (Imagine Sheryl Sandberg as a “Scooby-Doo” villain.) Her performance carries the film — a fortunate break for the director Mike Barker, who has the near-impossible challenge of shepherding the tone from snark to painful sincerity.
The unquestionably well-intentioned and obviously deeply personal Luckiest Girl Alive would benefit from more mature guidance.
Director Mike Barker’s slick, vaguely pernicious take on the material is a blend of dead-serious anguish and feel-good vindication. While many will find the results effective, others will not simply resist the guessing games and pulp instincts at odds with the trauma, but actively resent them.
Because of its unwieldy aspects, primarily those shoe-horned into the climax, its simplistic conclusion draws ire instead of the inspired elation these filmmakers crave.
The whole thing is mostly made up of tasteless decisions.

Decent film. The premise is very strong and I’m sure the book was great but the movie could of been a lot more. I did think the acting was good, written well and for what it was I had a decent time for a one time watch.

Very very heavy material, probably blends too many of those topics into one film, none of them really get full attention. There is basically not a single likeable character in the film.

Everything comes off as borderline exploitative. All the insensitivity of the film aside, I found every single character on display to be unlikable. No one is worth sympathising for, making the narrative fall further apart.

Selective feminism for female readers of "The New York Times". Ethnic ****, street **** against ordinary women, and WASP ****: why should Netflix give a damn about the first two categories that don't have enough money to subscribe to its platform? Why have civil rights movements supplanted social rights ones, and Florida has just become a new GOP fiefdom as Latinos refuse to be called Latinx with inclusive language? Mila Kunis produces herself in a film that conveys a revolting message: if you are a career woman, a successful woman, havin' been **** is a medal to brag about, as it means that you made it despite the starting handicap.
