Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man is a gritty, nasty piece of work.
It’s hard to believe that the likable British star of “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Lion” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” could be the next actor to become a hard-charging action director. But Patel’s filmmaking debut, “Monkey Man,” makes a bone-breaking case for just that.
Monkey Man is an energetic and thoughtful debut feature that leaves one excited about what Patel’s future as an action star might look like.
Patel does some fine work in Monkey Man even if its fight sequences rarely pop, flow or impress; they’re energetic but uninspired.
Dev Patel’s diehard sincerity clashes with unwieldy religious imagery in an India-set revenge saga whose tepid action scenes fail to make up for its muddled politics.
Going into these movies is always daunting as you get overexposed to so much inorganic media hype and build up nonsensical expectations, which most of the time don't even align with the vision of the director, leaving you praying for it to live up to ****, the most gratifying moments come when the credits roll, and you realise the film surpassed all of them.When Nicole Kidman said, "We come to this place for magic", this is what she meant.Monkey Man isn't a product of people in suits sacrificing creativity to maximize profits. It's a product of a man willing to go the distance to chase his dreams.This might be marketed as a bloody action thriller, which it is, but at its core, it's a heart-wrenching character drama set in the corrupted underworlds of **** Patel manages to do things, especially with music, which I have never seen any director even attempt before. The culture and the passion he has for it ooze through every frame.Taking into account the infamous stories of the production of this film and how the film industry works in general, it's nothing less than a miracle this got to see the light of day. We might not realise it yet, but we are very much witnessing the rise of the next biggest action franchise. Don't take this movie for granted, real blood was spilt to make it.

Certainly entertaining. Had a definite John Wick vibe, but I didn't like John Wick at all. I'd say this movie makes a few strange choices that weaken some of its big moments, and a few scenes go on too long.... I guess its biggest strength is that I haven't really seen this kind of story in this kind of setting. Hopefully Patel can just go upward from here.

horrible film,horrible dialogue, they are cussing in every line, who wrote this trash? The pacing is horrible. It's not even clear what is going on with the main characters mother when he has flashbacks. It's bad writing and directing if the audience has trouble decphering what is going on. Sadly wokeness has infected Indian films as well. This is a pro-trans film and the characters talk about it as well as a fake newscast in the film mentioning trans people. And without fail, there is a strong female character (Queenie?) in the film. Basically she just acts like a man and she is the main characters boss. Stay away from this trash film. The least of the worries should be the woke BS.
