This exquisitely rendered work from Kore-eda is a delicate web of compassion and embattlement: three separate views of one stretch of momentous time, spun and re-spun with care and craft.
What matters in Monster isn’t the gamesmanship built into its structure but the imaginative richness, the emotional immediacy, and the vital performances that are concentrated in its extended third section.

Enjoyed this film. Took me a moment to appreciate we were doing the Tarantino thing with the timeline but very good film.

One of the director’s finest, its thematic scope and emotional power growing with each new revelation.
This absorbing, ambiguously titled movie builds to a moving finish, one that reaffirms Kore-eda’s peerless skill at directing young actors in particular.
A gripping drama -- almost a mystery -- about ordinary people from Japanese master Kore-eda Hirokazu connects to viewers, despite an ambiguous ending that feels overly complex and arty.
The director’s customary delicacy, compassion and sensitivity ripple through the drama, though its affecting moments of illumination are more intermittent than cumulative.
Monster takes the long way around to get to the movie it ultimately wants to be, and I’m not sure the process is to its benefit.
Mosaic of a broken souls that unfolds like an origami, each fold revealing a new facet of its intricately woven story.
Kore-eda, a maestro of human narratives, weaves a tapestry of delicately observed moments. A grieving mom, bullied teen, connect with their school principal, in a delicate dance of shared burdens.
The pacing is deliberate, allowing silences to resonate with unspoken emotions. It's not fast-paced, but the silences speak volumes about loss, hope, and the resilience of the human. The film's true monster isn't a physical entity, but the isolation and pain that can fester within us.
Some may crave more answers, but the film's quiet beauty, nuanced, and raw.

In 'Monster,' one of Kore-eda's best films, the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker makes his own '****' with a devastating story about the different nuances of truth and the way we come to create a monstrous image of someone else without really knowing them. Through three points of view, the director brings us closer to pain, frustration, and an internal struggle in search of identity; three versions of a series of events presented to us as the buildup towards the rebirth of two innocent souls. Without a doubt, this is one of the most relevant films of the year.

Particularmente, gostei muito da edição desta obra do Hirokazu Koreeda, há umas voltas interessantes para ver diferentes pontos de vista, e o filme não precisa alertar o espectador para isso (tem que ficar atento), mas tudo tem um porquê organicamente ao roteiro: a depender da perspectiva e das motivações de nossas ações, seremos vistos como monstros, ou não. É um trabalho estupendo de roteiro, sensível ao extremo e muito bem montado.
No entanto, creio que certas referências soaram meio soltas, meio como fragmentada. Por mais que os meninos tenham certa ligação e que o comportamento adulto esteja vigilante sobre eles, trabalhos como "Close" encenam bem melhor uma ligação, e, portanto, funcionam mais na emoção.
Mas é impossível não se deliciar com o filme, e as passagens tanto na escola quanto nos momentos mais íntimos dos jovens, em cenas externas, estão muito bem filmadas. Diria que tecnicamente é maravilhoso, faltando apenas certo apuro nos diálogos e talvez nas atuações, que achei aqui meio maniqueísta em certos momentos.
Ver a humanidade como possibilidade de afetos e desafetos, e vendouma sociedade disciplinando corpos, causa certa repulsa. A pureza vai sendo, aos poucos, poluída pela cultura moralista, e a cena final deles desbravando a natureza mostra como, de forma genuína, estamos aptos para a felicidade, basta uma forma de escape. Lindo demais.
