Thugs offers a damning summary of the FDA approval process as a closed loop in which one hand washes the other and crucial data can remain hidden.
Despite [Bell's] casual aura, the filmmaker is eloquent and thoughtful. He argues that Big Pharma merely services consumer demand for quick fixes with "magic" pills, bringing his cautionary tale full circle.
It's unusually confessional and often moving, but Bell's film is unsatisfying as a piece of documentary journalism.
Even before a “do as I say, not as I do” twist costs it all credibility, Prescription Thugs is a not very good documentary about a very important subject.
It's symptomatic of the one-man-show form of polemical exposé that's come to dominate, and deteriorate, documentary practice.
