This french language Canadian zombie flick is a fresh, intriguing, scary example of how good this subgenre can be. Centered around a group of survivors whose lives intersect post apocalypse. The zombies are different in this one although the transmission is the same they still possess an intelligence that links them altogether. They gather to create large sculptures and they are able to set traps for their intended victims. They appear together and call out for help. It's hella creepy and although the finale is subjective it's intended message is clear, humans are the real monsters, it's definitely something that has been explored before just never like this, these creatures imitate what they once were. It's filled with chilling imagery and definitely leaves an impression long after the credits role. Props for including a lesbian couple as part of the survivors.
9/10
Incredible atmosphere and directing is superb. I can see why this film won so many awards. Marc-André Grondin's performance was one for the ages. Right from the start, Les Affames grips you in and doesn't let go. Very nice spin on a "zombie" film. Possibly my favorite zombie-like film of all time.
It goes for a different road for the zombie genre, but I feel like it lacks a firmer and much more concise script.
And it's not that the story rambles or anything like that, but with such poor characters, it's difficult to dig deep into the story, even with the good atmosphere.
So I can say, watch it, but have big reservations.
Nothing ever happens, the movie is a waste of time. I recommend you to watch other zombies film where something interesting is actually happening. The characters are barely okay and the atmosphere is ok, I'll give them that. When something actually happens, it feels cheap. The action scene is tolerable only because some of the practical effects, other than that it's just average. Avoid if you can.
No plot besides Walking Dead spinoff with less tension and more jumpscares. Hollow characters and bad zombies.
Even the gore which seems to be the main attraction is sparse and underwhelming.
