This 1984 movie starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn is simply perfect. It's gritty. It doesn't stoop to being overly predictable. And it just makes your heart swoon a little.
1984's "Rebel Without a Cause" copy Reckless has a tighter-than-usual Chris Columbus script, moodily colorful direction by James Foley, and good acting by Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah and Kenneth McMillan. [20 Jul 1986, p.5]
Contrived and cliched as it turns out to be, Reckless has enough vitality to carry it for a while, although it never stops recalling other films.
Reckless is weak, though teenagers may empathize with the fairy-tale fate of the improbable lovers. [11 Feb 1984, p.D4]
Youth on the fun can be a whole lot of fun, but Reckless, by first-time director James Foley, is a particularly dreary affair. [16 Feb 1984, p.81]
Some snazzy expressionist cinematography and an overkill rock score cannot disguise the fact that Reckless is a totally redundant repackaging of every misunderstood-teen-ager cliche from "Rebel Without a Cause" right up to "All the Right Moves," with which it shares a bleak industrial-town setting. Boring, cliche-ridden teen drama looks nice and features Quinn, who is fairly impressive in his debut. Hannah looks good but seems completely without depth, as do all the other characters in this routine bad-boy-loves-good-girl drama.
