It’s a given that the sound design would be a crucial element in a film about a drummer who suddenly loses his hearing, but Sound of Metal is so artfully crafted on that front that it nearly develops a new way of experiencing a movie.

Sound of Metal is two hours and 10 minutes long, and it moves at a snail’s pace, not because “nothing happens,” but because Marder hasn’t filled in the dramatic interior of what does happen. He has made a movie about deafness that’s at once experiential and too muffled to hear.

(Mauro Lanari) 1) A reflection on the addiction to sound and digital in a film broadcast on Amazon Prime Video is somewhat contradictory. 2) As soon as Mathieu Amalric enters the scene, one cannot help but think of a sequel / reboot of "Le Scaphandre et le Papillon" (Schnabel 2007): identical private (melo-)drama that makes one regret the Herzog peak of "Land des Schweigens und der Dunkelheit" (1971). 3) The inability to adapt to noise when playing similar music and wearing an Einstürzende Neubauten t-shirt is not the best of consistency.

Putting your character in so much pain and then judging every single one of his actions? WOW! Acting and Sound Mixing are fantastic, though.

The use of sound effects to portray musician losing his hearing are dramatic. But pacing of film is monotonous. The plot has curious gaps. The process of receiving implants is over-simplified as is its cost and timeline.
