It’s the perfect goodbye from an artist who lived to jolt you out of a sense of complacency. Mission accomplished.
By the time The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial comes to its somewhat startling conclusion, I was saddened by Friedkin's passing all over again. What a loss. But at least he left us one final stunner.

Último filme do mestre William Friedkin, eterno diretor da primeira e melhor versão de "O exorcista", é um exercício de diálogo e composição de argumentos num fatídico tribunal militar, continuação de "The Caine Mutiny" de 1954 comHumphrey Bogart e Robert Francis, tratando-se do julgamento dos acontecimentos ocorridos no navio, referente ao capitão destituído do seu navio por um oficial, com a desculpa de que estaria com insanidade mental, mas abrindo margem para um motim.
Toda a Marinha norte-americana sobrevive de hierarquias e papéis bem definidos, então o jogo de encenação e de contra-argumentação está baseado em comportamentos esperados, mas também questionáveis de seus oficiais. As disrupturas, no entanto, são sutis, e o ego em preservar uma instituição que sobrevive de imagens (como qualquer outra) é que dará o tom da graça aqui.
Psicólogos, médicos, técnicos, juizes... todos terão voz, e o filme navegará entre a comédia de absurdo e o julgamento pelos detalhes comportamentais de seus personagens. Uma construção de arquétipos interessante, ainda que não chegue aos pés da construção dialógica de um "Doze homens e uma sentença do Lumet, claramente um dos filmes inspiradores desse aqui.
Ainda assim, muito divertido, com um final que joga na nossa cara toda a plasticidade dos desdobramentos. Friedkin se despede do mundo da arte em grande estilo, deixando uma obra divertida e interessante de se acompanhar, que talvez merecesse um reconhecimento maior. Mas ainda assim, seu nome marcará para sempre a cinefilia mundial. Descanse em paz, mestre.

Decent adaptation with great acting and a modern twist. The only issue I have with it is that we are missing a lot of the context for the case. In the original movie, we got to see the behavior that lead to the mutiny. We also got to see the relationships between the men that lead up to the key ending scene. I still prefer the original, but this is a close second.

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial isn’t Friedkin’s most sophisticated directorial effort, nor is it his most advanced thematic musing on man’s capacity for evil. Yet it enshrines him as an actor’s director, one capable of coaxing out subtle responses that can, by decimals of a degree, change the temperature in the room.
Like “Cruising” and “To Live and Die in L.A.,” to cite two of my favorite works by Friedkin, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial does not stop playing with our heads when the credits start to roll.
While “The Caine Mutiny” clearly loses something in translation, the inherent drama of the courtroom faceoff survives intact.
This ultimately feels like a story that didn’t need remaking, with performances that would have tickled in a one-night view on Broadway. It’s Friedkin’s swan song, yes, but is it representative of his output? Probably not.
There’s a history of great directors going out on a lesser film, and unfortunately, Friedkin joins their ranks. He leaves behind an extraordinary filmography of groundbreaking work that will inspire generations to come, but The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial will exist, at best, as a footnote to this legendary career.
Single location and very straightforward. The uninteresting beginning and middle is necessary setup for Sutherland's deranged and electric monologues in the finale. Semi shock ending.

That's what my films are about". And this is also the reason for the failure of New Hollywood: to assume that such fine line exists or has already been discovered/identified.
