Entertaining and surprisingly funny given the subject matter, the movie’s also an exquisitely acted affair paced by Chastain (who also produces), turning in a career-best effort as the complex Tammy Faye.
No matter what we might think of her, it’s clear that Tammy Faye was one of a kind. Chastain’s mannered plague of tics does right by her in that respect, but she’s been inserted into a template now worn from overuse.

The stars outshine the movie in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a dazzling showcase for Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker in a dutiful, somewhat disjointed chronicle of how the televangelists amassed great wealth before his disgraced fall.
Chastain gets some huge, showstopping moments – her final scene is genuinely terrific, and another scene that recreates Tammy Faye's on-air conversation with gay minister and AIDS activist Steve Pieters is effective and tender – but it would've been nicer if the movie itself was more worthy of her considerable talents.
This is potentially moving dramatic stuff—or at least bracing melodramatic stuff—but Showalter’s dramatization has a glazed, glassy-eyed surface, like a Pee-wee Herman movie without any of Paul Rubens’ surreptitiously sophisticated kindergarten wit.
As a performance piece, The Eyes of Tammy Faye connects. But is that enough?
The movie, with its numbing overload of pastels and prayer, is too tonally uncertain to yield any fun. It’s a depressing window into the worst excesses of faith racketeering that has little to offer in the way of commentary.
Praise to the makeup people behind the camera, they deserve an oscar, everytime i look at Jessica Chastain as an older Tammy Faye, the more i unrecognize her, it's incredible, and thankfully it's not only her makeup that's incredible, her performance was incredible too, it's one of the best real life person potrayal in movie i've ever seen, not to mention Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker was amazing too, The Eyes Of Tammy Faye is a powerful, fascinating, and dazzling biopic movie that strongly perform and made, the set, the editing, the atmosphere, the performance are all mesmerising, The Eyes Of Tammy Faye is one of the best films of the year.

Jessica Chastain is incredible in this movie. Her transformation both visually and personally is absolutely incredible. She perfectly captures the persona of Tammy Faye Baker, a women who is struggling with a manipulative husband and drug abuse but is still trying to remain a good and true person through it all. Chastain even sings, which was a skill I had no idea she possessed. Easily one of the best performances of the year. Supporting her is Andrew Garfield who gives what may be his third best performance of the year, but is still very very strong. The makeup and hair team outdid themselves on this one. Had I not known that it was Chastain and Garfield going into it I would've never figured it out. The prosthetics absolutely transform them and render them unrecognizable. I also adored other technical aspects of the film. It's very appealing to look at. Unfortunately, the writing and story don't hold up to these other strong points. It's hard to figure out how the film's central relationship between Tammy Faye and Jim works when you are constantly cutting three years into the future. There was also a ridiculous amount of product placement for Diet Coke that really bugged me. Additionally, there are a lot of religious themes that didn't work the best for me personally. These issues really hurt the movie's standing in my mind, but I still definitely think it's worth a watch if only for the powerhouse performance of Chastain.
