Canadian writer-director Tim Brown captures a heady mix of action, bloodshed and comedy here, hitting all the high notes of a crime thriller even as he appears to be spoofing the genre — and who better to do that with than Cage, the meta master himself?
This is an action film, meaning that’s where the fun lies. Cage gets to show off his special skills with unique bits of punctuation after each kill. There are plenty of chases, gun combat, and hand-to-hand fighting. The only disappointment you’ll feel is that everything is done for comedic effect. This is much lighter in tone than you probably want it to be.

After a couple gets into trouble with gangsters, the mother and daughter escape to the Cayman Islands. That's where she finds her father (Nicolas Cage), a retired bum who used to be a special operative. Then the fun begins. Every bad guy who shows up is quickly and often cleverly dispatched by his "special skills." Writer/director Tim Brown keeps the action moving, while giving the film a playful vibe. This includes the villains (Jackie Earle Haley and Ron Perlman) who are basically sweet idiots. This movie doesn't offer anything new or unique, but it's a pleasing, fast-faced and amusing little action flick that's made even more enjoyable by Cage's unique presence.

Cage dials it down nicely, keeping his freaky at a gentle 6 out 10. The film cruises along on his charm; it’s otherwise a totally disposable but mostly entertaining action comedy drama with a really stupid plot and a few good laughs.
Eu curti ver o Nicolas Cage dando uma de avô rambo (não sou eu que digo, o próprio filme o adjetiva ora como avô, ora como Rambo mesmo, literalmente). Mas é óbvio que você encontrará aqui todo uma gama de concessões e absurdos, do tipo ele segurar sua filha com uma mão na corda e com a outra estar tacando-lhe a porrada nos vilões (que, diga-se, são bem abestalhados). Para piorar, a trama gira m torno de um suposto pen drive valioso, algo já visto milhões de vezes, e conta com aquelas reviravoltas absurdas, impostores, pessoas infiltradas, e claro, muitos tiros do herói e muitos vilões caricatos. Tem que ir para se divertir e se desligar.

I had another Nicolas Cage movie in me today and true to the pattern I just mentioned on my previous review of him making several bad movies before delivering a good one, The Retirement Plan comes to emphasize the side of the bad ones. I'll say that I think this mix could have worked and mostly you would expect it to because its cast was more than decent, but when everyone is there to pay the bills - I'm talking about everyone talking writer and director included - the outcome inevitably ends up being mediocre.
