It's different enough from the original that you may be better off looking at it fresh, as a promising and more straightforward (okay, relatively straightforward) sci-fi adventure series with the requisite shadow conspiracy and, for those in the past, a looming Armageddon.
Addictive, epic, extremely enjoyable and very well thought out story. Its tone might be trashy (it isn't a Gilliam film) but the story & characters/their respective arcs are so very, incredibly worth it.
I personally think it should've ended with an Inception-style ambiguity, but that's a minor gripe from the final scene of the whole thing; it didn't detract anything from my overall enjoyment of the whole.
Edit: I've watched it twice since leaving my original review and it's easily the most underrated sci-fi...anything. If you can get over the fact that it isn't pretentious or that it's lacking some kind of "esteem" in any such arbitrary regard, you might just find yourself in awe of this fantastically well-crafted show.
12 Monkeys hums along at a reasonable pace; its pilot is pleasingly energetic and efficient.... The problem is, 12 Monkeys tends to prioritize a series of MacGuffins over attempts to deepen its characters and their relationships.
It starts promising. A nice twist from the movie for sure, but overall great. The first season are promising and great. Logical build up. Then, in around in late season 2 when you expect a ending it does the opposite, more illogical twists and hasten written plot points reveals.
12 monkeys is a prime example of a series that start nice and suddenly it has achieved a popular status, that they need more material then whats given from the start. Things start to go to **** Other similar series that does this are Suits, Prison Break, Lost, White Collar, etc. They simply not have the ending planned from the start and it goes from quality to cash cow instantaneous. I watched the entire show until it was, as not unexpectedly canceled (mainly because my SO felt invested) Where the show ended was just horrible, and a betrayal to every fan watching it. IF you want to watch this, make sure you end at a peak in around season 2. Season 1 (6 stars) Season 2 (7 stars)
Season 3 (2 stars)
Season 4 (-1 star)
