If there’s one downside to this new season is that you can figure out how most of it will play out just by watching these two episodes, which may feel repetitive to some viewers. But when the formula is so fun and the characters are such a delight to watch, why change it? If the premiere of Season 7 is any indication, we could do much worse than seeing the Nine-Nine get into new antics for the next couple of years.
As Brooklyn Nine-Nine enters it’s seventh season the formula may sometimes feel over-familiar, but as is always the case with these Mike Schur created sit-coms, the cast is strong enough that it still makes for an enjoyable watch.
Brooklyn 99 season 7 review:
Season 7 of the 2013 comedy series Brooklyn 99 is yet again pretty much the exact same thing that we’ve got for the last 7 or so years, but ultimately that’s not such a bad thing. Like every season, the first few episodes are a tad underwhelming as they aim to resolve the cliffhanger ending of the previous season (which has for some odd reason become a staple of the show), but after the first 3 episodes it picks up a bit and is significantly more enjoyable. There’s still plenty of good humor, but often it feels like they’re clutching at straws, looking for anything possible that will make the audience laugh. Whilst this mostly pays off it makes me wonder, how long will they be able to sustain this? Will season 8 even be any good? I also believe that despite the fact I enjoy the humor, many will not, and it really comes down to how invested you are in the characters. If like me you love the characters and they are amongst your all time favorites, you’re bound to enjoy this, however if you’re not THAT invested your enjoyment will be hindered. Fortunately (Very Minor Spoilers ahead) the show does not end on an unresolved cliffhanger, which opens up the possibility of season 8 having a decent start! I think it’s also important to add that there are only 13 episodes! For a comedy show with only a half hour episode length, 13 episodes is in my opinion outrageously short, however I do understand the decision to do so. There is also one episode in particular that I’d like to talk about, that being “Pimemento”, which sees the annual return of the fan favorite character Adrian Pimento. As suggested by the title, the episode frequently references the Christopher Nolan classic Memento, and even at one point references his directorial debut: Following. If you know my tastes, you’ll know I am a massive Nolan fan, and I significantly enjoyed this episode, however not that many people have even seen Memento, and even less have seen Following, which leads me to believe that this episode would be far less enjoyable to the majority of viewers. In conclusion, I think Brooklyn 99 season 7 is lots of fun, but the formula is beginning to wear thin, and the lack of originality shows.
8/10
B99 delivers another funny season.
This season doesn't do too much differently than previous ones. It delivers fun lines and a distinct cast of characters. Admittedly, being in its seventh season there are moments where the show can feel long in the tooth. (It feels like they are running out of story ideas for Doug Judy (played by Craig Robinson) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) I feel is getting more and more cartoonishly ingratiating as the show goes on). But, this isn't the show as a whole. There are several particularly memorable episodes, including the finale, and after all these years, the annual Halloween Heist episode is still strong.
I'm particularly glad that the begining episodes didn't go the way I thought they would. Last season's cliffhanger was way too similar to the cliffhanger from season 2. I was afraid that the situation this year would be too close to the beginnings of season 3, not to mention season 4. Luckily, I think the writers realized they had tread this path and went in a different direction. However, the setup for this season was so inconsequential that I don't think it was needed.
One last nitpick: Vanessa Bayer has a recurring role in this. She starts off very promising, but I was disappointed where they went with her.
Overall, if you liked the previous seasons then you'll like this.
