There’s enough early momentum supported by convincing performances, chemistry between the two leads, a setting that is its own character, vampire encounters, and general whoopee vibrations that indicate how much fun co-creators Thornton and Fletcher likely had in making it. It’s palpable and contagious. Let’s hope it doesn’t later betray the promise it kicks off with.
All these productions have a strong sense of place, but Firebite is something else. You wouldn’t want every new show to be shot in Coober Pedy – but damn, it works for this one.
Barnes-Cowan and Collins are just so arrestingly good, both together and apart, that they’re a treat to watch even when the story is dragging.
At times, the images evoke found footage, and at others they’re infused with the inkiness and sense of depth of a comic book panel, but their inconsistent aesthetics feel haphazard rather than considered. ... In contrast to the strained physicality of the fight scenes, [the blow-up between Tyson and Shanika] bottles not just Tyson’s grace, but the acuity with which Firebite explores the dangers of monsters real and imagined.
